Description
no Dracostryx related but a little reference aid to Backgrounds.2nd row is around the minimum level of passing for Backgrounds. As you can see depth through clounds, hills, rocks and bushes while still have colour and minimal shading to see a sort of depth to the image.
3rd row is pretty much what you should aim for. While your skills may not be brilliant, but the background should be filled in layers of various objects, aka trees, mountains rock formations, leaves, bushes, clouds, distance cities and towns, the list goes on. It shows the character interacting and feeling the world around them and gives the viewer a chance to see what the character is like. Dont forget the shadows, lighting and colours of the world.
Take advantage of various brushes and presets, however do not heavily rely on Stamp Brushes (Trees, rock, mountain, etc.) Use Stamp brushs to accent or as a base to your art, and practice with other brushes and tools. You can use blocky or soft brushes to block out the colour while then using a smaller blocky brush or texture brush to block out smaller sections, use the blend and smudge tool where needed, and just work smaller and smaller.
Work from the back forward, or the largest sections to the smallest. and work in sections. Backgrounds come in three sections:
the Background -the largest section that is found at the back, usually a large wall, the Sky, horizons, mountain ranges.
the Midground - the Middle of the background. basically what is between the viewer and the horison. This is hills, forests, paths infront of the viewer to a distanct town, etc
the Foreground, what is directly infront of the viewer. THis can go infront or directly behind the Subject the viewer is looking at. this could be a bush, a branch on the ground, a log or rock soemone is navigating around.
Even if you can not work on level three still try to get the most out of your backgrounds.

oof i always try and aim for around the 3rd row but i find myself really impatient with my brush presets and focusing more on the main subject rather than putting in an equal amount of care and time into the background. Landscapes are simple enough, but busy areas with large buildings and corner shops are my real downfall
This is a great guide regardless and has some great rule sets that will definitely help with background in the future
