Description
no Dracostryx related but a little reference aid to Backgrounds.2nd row is around the minimum level of passing for Backgrounds. As you can see depth through clounds, hills, rocks and bushes while still have colour and minimal shading to see a sort of depth to the image.
3rd row is pretty much what you should aim for. While your skills may not be brilliant, but the background should be filled in layers of various objects, aka trees, mountains rock formations, leaves, bushes, clouds, distance cities and towns, the list goes on. It shows the character interacting and feeling the world around them and gives the viewer a chance to see what the character is like. Dont forget the shadows, lighting and colours of the world.
Take advantage of various brushes and presets, however do not heavily rely on Stamp Brushes (Trees, rock, mountain, etc.) Use Stamp brushs to accent or as a base to your art, and practice with other brushes and tools. You can use blocky or soft brushes to block out the colour while then using a smaller blocky brush or texture brush to block out smaller sections, use the blend and smudge tool where needed, and just work smaller and smaller.
Work from the back forward, or the largest sections to the smallest. and work in sections. Backgrounds come in three sections:
the Background -the largest section that is found at the back, usually a large wall, the Sky, horizons, mountain ranges.
the Midground - the Middle of the background. basically what is between the viewer and the horison. This is hills, forests, paths infront of the viewer to a distanct town, etc
the Foreground, what is directly infront of the viewer. THis can go infront or directly behind the Subject the viewer is looking at. this could be a bush, a branch on the ground, a log or rock soemone is navigating around.
Even if you can not work on level three still try to get the most out of your backgrounds.

...why the hell is it possible, that you have such a small amount of watchers? you make something great! and this is helpful too. I have wondered what would be good enough for a background ^^'

This is amazing! I love this progression of background rendering and painting. It's truly amazing to see this point A to C process! I hope to work on backgrounds like this someday. ^^

its definitely not a how I do it but more of an advice/admin tool for Dracostryx, an ARPG. Its more so people have a good idea how to improve their backgrounds

well the world is never a flat colour, its always varying in colours. a simple thing of adding some variation in colour can make a huge difference

Dont even be discouraged from trying, not just with backgrounds by anything new. make sure you reference, practice and be patient with yourself.

It’s always good to just try something new with your art, not just backgrounds. While they don’t have to be in every picture, they do help add a scene and aid in a character’s development

Thanks. It's just that I am literally trying my best to get to the point where I have got that touch of creativity within me. I guess I need to work on that a bit more as well.

Alriandi In reply to GuardianSoulMLP [2018-10-17 22:06:02 +0000 UTC]
I completely understand with that. Well I find just randomly sketching, doodling, or even just looking at something in real life and recreating it in art really helps with creativity. Don’t have to upload it or show anyone, just do random art sketches and go with what you want.
Just throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. Also try to avoid bringing your attitude to art down, if you say your art is crap, reply with “but I am making it better by focusing on this”

Well basically try and look at real life examples. Real life is never two colours, nor is rarely perfectly flat. Try and focus on adding small things at a time, aka today work on adding more colour or adding more substance. And don’t be ashamed of having poor backgrounds, everyone started where you are

while you aren't completely wrong, it isn't completely right either. there's a lot of factors that decide the composition of a piece. and telling people "you're doing it wrong", isn't a very good way to try and help people improve. give pointers if you want, but only if they ask. give someone tips, but don't force them to take the advice if they don't want it, because you're only hurting your cause at that point.

I think your point is usually good. But here this is specifically meant to help people who do backgrounds for Dracostryx, and the first row represents backgrounds that are unlikely at best to pass for full points.

This isn't so much about criticism. Its a helpful, gentle guideline for an ARPG Alriandi moderates to display what counts for extra points and what doesnt! Its not really a set in stone rule.

Hm... I think the top moon one looks okay, since the sky's flat (or at least our perception of it is). But the bottom version of it (with the trees) is awesome.
And I like the center one of the desert most, I think, because it shows the emptiness better (and the color in the sky is cool). The bottom one looks a bit cluttered (or maybe like the scale's off? It looks like you don't see as much, like it's zoomed in, while the middle version is a wider shot and shows more of the bg).
It sounds like good advice for the most part, but I feel like there's exceptions sometimes.

These are intended for an arpg I help mod, and many times many newer and not as skilled artists are ask to improve their backgrounds by adding more substance. I never intended to be an “you must only do this” but it is a good start for those who don’t have a lot of skills and knowledge.
the third row with the moon is meant to be looking through trees. However it’s not brilliant cause I expected this as a modding aid when I am helping others with their art, and not get as popular as it got

What exactly is an arpg? I just saw this on dA's front page and thought it looked neat. Seems like some good advice for any kind of bg.

Art role playing game. Where people do art of specific creatures and use the art to level up the creature and complete tasks to allow the creature to breed, participate in certain competitions etc along with participating in activities where the user gets items as a reward.
