Description
To the camel said the tree,"Can you spare a drink for me?
I am parched down to the roots and I am dying."
Said the camel to the tree,
"I need all my drink for me!
For the sun is hot and I am fairly frying."
Then the tree he shook his leaves,
And he said with mighty grief,
"Why cannot you give a dying tree a hand?
Though I stand so near this beach,
Still my roots they cannot reach,
And all I can devour is the sand."
"Save your water- shut your trap!"
Cried the camel with a snap,
"For both of us, do stop your idle chatter.
In your shade I make my bed,
Whether you be live or dead,
And I'd almost say preferably the latter."

Looks like Trunker hasn't gotten some water in a while, huh?
You better watch what you say, Gobi, or else Banjo and Kazooie will make you eat those words!

Trunker is great, though I do like Gobi himself. I picture him as the Eeyore of the Banjo-Kazooie series, but also with a mean streak...

Man that camel is a jerk. WATER THE PALM TREE, MAN.
Gobi's Desert is one of my favorite levels. This is awesome, I really like the little story you came up for it. I could totally see a collection of Banjo inspired children's tales

Yeah, I definitely want to do more of this type of thing, and with other games too. I have a really big affinity for children's tales and storybook-type things, both the genuinely whimsical and innocent, and those with darker undertones, or those even outright frightening...

Thanks! If I could get Rare's permission some day... I think it would be great. Seriously. I remember seeing Pokemon children's books years ago... like there was one about a Snorlax who kept trying to eat everything...

That poem is wonderful, ands very deep and meaningful. I never thought of Trunkle sitting on the edge of life. I hope you make more of these, they are ABSOLUTELY fantastic~!

Thank you! I certainly mean to; I really enjoy writing rhyming poems, and it comes very naturally to me, but I don't do it so often anymore. Maybe I'll even write a few without illustrations, but I'll try to pair the two when possible.

Making more would be terrific, you have quite a knack at it, but, perhaps if you were to make a book, you would make the poems more lighthearted?

Altermentality In reply to Poppilten [2009-04-10 02:13:50 +0000 UTC]
Of course. Although I'd also like to make a darker book for older kids in the style of what they read when they were younger. It would be a nice twist.
And hey, the little children's tales of days gone by were often very dark indeed. I'm influenced by the children's poems we read in German...

Mmmm, yes, a varieties of books are very nice~ Have you ever thought of showing a collection of your poems (If you have any, of course) To a publisher? But when you say darker..What exactly do you mean?
Some classic Children's tales were Dark, if I remember, but I'm not sure about your German book~

Well, there's this famous book of German kids' poems meant to teach morals called Struwwelpeter; it includes a story about a boy who is warned by his mother not to suck his thumb, but he keeps doing so, and then a random tailor bursts into his house and cuts his thumbs off with giant scissors. And a tale about a kid who wouldn't eat, so he wasted away, literally, to death. And- my favorite, which I recently memorized and performed for a competition- a story of a girl who plays with a match, and whose cats try to warn her about the dangers, but she doesn't listen to them, so she catches fire and burns to a pile of ashes.
I'm interested in the notion that the idea today is to bring kids up with as much happy, innocent, carefree fluff as possible; whereas in many cultures, and in bygone days of our own, it was important to instill major fear in children of what would happen if they acted wrongly. Which society had the better-behaved children, I wonder...? But the more afraid and perhaps unhappy ones?
And of course, lots of even our familiar fairy tales didn't have happy endings originally...
And about getting published, I'd like to some day, but I don't have enough of a collection yet...
And when I say darker, I mean a bit more like this Gobi poem; not mean-spirited themselves, but sometimes showing people being mean or cruel; refusing to sugar-coat things and make them all happy-happy.

Yeah, actually, the whole Banjo-Kazooie series is like a twisted, somewhat "grimdark", children's bedtime tale.
I'm probably talking about Banjo-Tooie, here. I insist that zombified king Jingaling scared the crap outta me when I was younger.

Yeah, BK was more of a goofy fairy tale, and BT is the dark one. Still funny, of course, but with darker humor. I like that, though; it's one of the reasons I like BT even more than its predecessor. Very light-hearted stuff is great, but I personally prefer something that gets a good mix between humor and seriousness... and BT's darkness makes it more epic.
Zombie J never scared me. I used to go poke and bother him all the time when I was playing the game... a weird form of entertainment. I have to admit, the very concept is extremely creepy, but I think it's really awesome that he became a zombie and yet ended up living again to tell the tale; it's one of the things that makes him such a beloved character to me.

Yes, that's a compliment! I love her rhymes.

Yay, I got compared to Grunty! Hehe, I know it's a compliment. I love her rhymes too. Sometimes they seem so cheesey and forced, but that makes them all the better to me, just as I love a corny pun.

The textures on the tree are so cool! You always make the most interesting illustrations, Fluffy. Poor Trunker, I always wanted to scoop up great handfuls, gallon jugs, even cracked eggshells worth of water from that oasis and dump it strait on his roots. Gobi is a selfish little thing- I felt sorry for him when he was stuck in Witchyworld's Hall of Horrors though, 'Ancient Bearded Camel'
Eggs solve all the world's problems, yay!

Seriously! Raw eggs can:
Fix buckets
Transform into flower seeds
Clear cobwebs
...And much more! Sounds like the makings of an infomercial!
Yeah, I feel sorry for Gobi; but I picture him as being really cranky about all of the crap that happens to him. And obviously he takes a lot of pride in the water stored in his hump, as he never wants to give it up...

The poem is great! You really should do that more often, I really enjoyed it... you make it sound like a fable with some deeper meaning.
Trunker looks so sad... Someone stomp on Gobi.
Heh, I just found out Rare has misinformed us. Gobi has one hump, thus being a dromedary. But, as he claims to be a camel himself, I canΒ΄t argue.

Altermentality In reply to Sunjinjo [2009-04-02 02:09:49 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Since BK and BT are like warped fairy tales anyway (with BT being especially dark and morbid... in a great way), there's a lot of potential for things like this. Children's poems, sometimes twisted.
Yeah, and to top that, I learned not too long ago that Clanker is supposed to be a "mechanical whale". What?! Sure, he has a blowhole, but... he also has gills... I always considered him a shark. Ah well, he's mechanical so he's not technically anything. I can pass it off to Grunty being confused and not knowing anything about biology.
I remember Dac got really cranky once because Terry is apparently a pteranodon (I think it was?) and not, in fact, a pterodactyl.
The bottom line is, Rare obviously loves the animal world but doesn't care about being perfectly correct with their terms.

Heheh, IΒ΄d love to see the Twinklie Munchers included in the tale of Christmas.
I remember that. ClankerΒ΄s a crossbreed. If he wasnΒ΄t built IΒ΄d like to see his evolution.
Yeah, pterodactyls have longer tails and are far smaller, if I remember correctly. Also, TerryΒ΄s head crest makes him a clear pteranodon. But, as IΒ΄m constantly reminded of by everyone around me, the games are for ages 3 and up... not aimed at people that are supposed to care. Rare probably didnΒ΄t expect us to notice. (Tsk.)

Freezeezy Peak always made me feel like I was in a Christmas movie. I'm sure several strange wintery tales could come from there... and yes, I could certainly see a story about creatures who went around devouring everyone's Christmas lights!

I could make it so. I want to write and illustrate children's books some day, perhaps rhyming, and I really enjoy this kind of thing... pairing illustrations with a little story or poem. I could get practice now! Although in the future I don't plan to scar children with scary thoughts of talking trees wasting away helplessly while indifferent camels look on.
Plus, I've decided that while I'm doing fanart I might as well do something special with each piece...
