Do you think this method would work in Adobe Photoshop CS5? It has the pen tool and stuff.

I think it should (perhaps needing slight modifications). Based on a quick googling of CS5's capabilities, it does handle native vector graphics, so if it has some sort of clipping/masking capibilities those are the most important things for this method.

The Part One Link on others leads you to Part 3 :/
Still A great Tutorial though, really helped me out! ^.^

Whoops. Fixed; thanks for the heads-up!

I have no idea how long this guide has been on EqD, but I should have looked for it far sooner. I use Gimp, but this was still incredibly helpful! Thanks for taking the time to put it together (even if it was forever ago XD).

I have been using Inkscape for *years*. Only today, on reading this, do I understand how to use clipping masks properly.

Wow, this is a nice tutorial. If nothing else, it's given me a lot of hints on how to use tools properly to more effectively do what I've been kludging my way through before now. Eyes have always been the hardest part of a pony to get looking "right" for me. They're just so expressive, and there's so many subtle things going on! This is going to be a significant help.

Really great tutorial! I'm just wondering though, how do you like inking in inkscape? Right now i've been using paintoolsai and I was wondering how hard it might be to learn it and use it effectively.

Well, Inkscape is vector-based, so the experience would be rather different than the one with paintoolsai. I've been using Inkscape for maybe a year now; I like it and can get pretty good results, but I haven't done much besides ponies and OotS-esque avatars. There's a learning curve, but once you get the hang of placing node handles just right and throwing clips and masks everywhere, it all starts to click. For the demanding vector artist on a budget, Inkscape can't be beat.

Awesome Tutorial that finally got me started with vectoring these damn ponies. Only one question
when i copy the scalera to make a mask for the eye, that mask seems to be completely static, if i move the eye around it stays put, and i have to release it to move, is there any way to fix that?

By the sounds of it, you have the eye all set up (clips, groups, etc) and when you try to move it all you lose the iris piece because the clipped area doesn't move? I remember having troubles with something like that, although I can't replicate it at the moment and I can't remember how I fixed it, either.
If you can be really explicit about what groups, objects, clips, clones, etc exist in your svg and what action you're trying to take with what objects/groups selected and what unintended results that action produces I'll try to replicate it on my end to see if my muscle memory takes over and tells me not to do something.

I followed the tutorial down to the point so i have
Eyelash layer
Scalera clone clipping
--> Group of:
------ Pupil
------ Iris Group
--------- Iris
--------- Highlights
Scalera.
The problem seems to be that whenever i clip the iris group with the scalera clone, the scalera clone attaches to the iris group instead of being stuck to the old scalera. Resulting in any movement of the iris also moves the clipper. I have to unattach the clipping before moving the eye to get it to work..
I've only played around with inkscape for a day or two now tho, so im probably missing something obvious
any idea?

Double-click on the iris once you apply the clip mask. You'll be able to select things "inside" the clip, and move them around without moving the clip.
Hopefully that's what's up.

ohwow, it was as easy as that, huh
That worked wonders, and thanks again for an awesome tutorial, never in a million years did i think i would ever be able to make something like this, and thanks to your tutorial getting me started...

I also had this problem with the clip shape (invisible) moving along with the iris. But double-clicking the iris group and regrouping the pieces inside it again solved this problem.
But now I have different problem: when I select the whole eye and try to move it to some other place, the clip area stays in place where it has been previously, instead of moving along with the whole eye selected. Is there a way to solve this problem too?
Those clipping techniques in Inkscape are pretty weird and unintuitive. It would be much better if clipping paths could stay on their separate layers instead of disappearing, to be able to modify further and just hiding those layers when I don't need them... 9_9

what you want to do is CLONE the clipping piece instead of duplicating it, this will ensure that whatever changes you make to the original is replicated in the clone

Cloning works just fine for updating the shape, but it doesn't work with position.
