Description Bang This one was fun, right from the initial terragen render . But... damn, I'm not doing a volcano again

Really dunno what to say, the original image is HUGE (good for prints, huh?) - my computer has gone through hell with this one.

A quick note.... The image isn't realistic - that is, it is highly unlikely to happen. The eruption has been referenced from an atomic bomb blast, not volcano eruptions (since, there aren't many images on the net that I could get inspiration from, I used my imagination and some nuke blast refs). I'm gonna be showing close-ups later through further submissions (the nova up top is good enough on its own should I compose the crop right). And yes, top left is a nova, and there'll be a standalone version of that at a closer view coming soon.

the initial render can be viewed here

If you have any questions about the image, drop me a note or ask in the comment.

Feels good to be making art again

(this description is subject to change, I have a blank mind and forgot things I originally intended to put in)

It's nice, that the site opens at the top of the picture. When I roll down the image and reveal the rest, well... astonishing. GOOOD WORK.

This has got to be one of the best pieces ever submitted to deviantART in this category. The realism and detail of the image is breathtaking for being made digitially.

As I stare at the main explosion in space, it's unfathomable to me of the insane amounts of detail in that is expressed in it. The endless hours that it must have taken to achieve this effect is something that I wouldn't have the patience to do.

The palm tree looks wonderful. The lighting and stance of it ties perfectly into the piece. It greatly increases the effect of the planet just being "blown away", if you will, due to the supernova and eruption.

As usual, your space background is amazing. Nothing really to say there.

The one thing that drew me to this piece the most has got to be the dust cloud formed by the eruption. The lighting on it is perfect and its shape is very realistic. I personally believe that it is the greatest part of the image.

I remember when I first saw Greg Martin's site and I thought he has got to be the greatest digital artist to ever live. Then, a friend on a graphics site I go to showed me your deviantART gallery. And to sum up a story that can be very lengthy, after trying to reattatch my jaw, I was inspired to try and learn space art.

Amazing piece of work, but what work from you isn't?

I think this quite good overall. The column of fire looks accurate to me. But I would suggest that the clouds at the top of the column are too compacted. A nuclear bomb will explode so quickly that the clouds will seem tight and coherent at first, but a volcanic eruption starts more slowly, so the billowing is more spread out and less distinct. I like the small boat on the left, and the rest of the scene is both very artistic and has good realism.

Don't get carried away by sharpening! I think it will look better with slightly smoother volcano clouds and that little boat.
Other then that, the composition is wonderful, and so is the fearsome amount of detail. Good job!

man jesus fuck your awesome, like usuall lol, theres just a couple hings ir eally dont liek about this. your spaces is awesome, but when i look at the terragen i can see some spots where u can tell u did post work in photshoop(its only little things and r not very noticable) but i think the splashes in the water and the vapor behind each of the rocks looks too fake, otherwise everyhting else is freeking awesome

You know? I was thinking about it and have you tried researching on Mt St-Helens?
Well I know you said you don't want to do any more volcanos, but since you said that you didn't find any images that inspired you and based your image on nuke explosions and all.... sounds to me that you were not satisfied because of not having any actual good inspiration involving volcanos.

I don't know if you've heard of-it but Mt St-Helens is a still active Volcano in the western region of Washington State which had a very... explosive eruption in May 1980.

If you look through this site you may find a lot of things and information of interest:
[link]

The BlowDown:
[link]

Lava Fountain:
[link]

If you're interested enough and actually WANT to do-it, I think that with all the information that can be found there you could manage to Model a terrific piece just by concentrating on the volcano and it's actual effect on the surrounding environment instead of "stuffing" your image-up with a bunch of other things... you know what I mean?! I mean come-on! Explosions, Lava Flow/fountain, Tons of smoke and debris, Mud Slides, Ashfalls...
The Mt St-Helens incident affected things up to a bit over 16 miles north of the Volcano, and apparently Volcanos on earth are quite small compared to on other planets! I'm sure you can imagine something terrifyingly majestic based on this?!

I just want to say that with recent things happening to my life, pieces like these help me escape from reality. Thanks. A more general question this time, where do you get the energy and inspiration, basically the drive to create works of wonder like these?

Is it in some form of music?

Emotions?

Either way, I'm sure lucky to have come across your works.

Jesus christ. I go away for two weeks and this is what happens?

Damn.

Man - my first impulse was to think to myself, "screw you alyn. you're just so damn good at this that I'll never be able to match your talent. I give up." I was really steaming mad. There's a reason:

This is incredible.

After I got over the initial shock, I realised that really all I had to do was appreciate your talent, and hope that someday I can prove a challenge to it. So I commend you on this beautiful artwork. I set the wallpaper version to my desktop.

Hell, I'd go over the details of the peice in a long and complicated amount of writing, but who better than the artist to critique their own work?

Just one thing I want to say - the terragen work is awesome, but I'm used to seeing that from you. The cloud details are also incredible, but I'm used to seeing them from other artists on dA. But the space:

That's like nothing I've ever seen before. It's got the most amazing feeling of depth and size... and the details and nebulas/explosions etc are wow. This is, without a doubt (*scrolls up to check this statement before typing*) the most amazing space I've ever seen any artist create. In particular I favour the smaller nebula to the upper right of the planet.

You should release high-res screenshots...

Oh, and I'd also love to see a .psd... if I ever see you in Wales when I go to live there I'll buy you a recordable DVD. (Copyright restrictions apply, duh.) And you probably wouldn't have the time to assist me, but I could use your help in creating some art of my own.

That being that, I leave you with my full appreciation of your talent and skill and ability to create such stunning artwork.
