Description
BangReally dunno what to say, the original image is HUGE (good for prints, huh?) - my computer has gone through hell with this one.
A quick note.... The image isn't realistic - that is, it is highly unlikely to happen. The eruption has been referenced from an atomic bomb blast, not volcano eruptions (since, there aren't many images on the net that I could get inspiration from, I used my imagination and some nuke blast refs). I'm gonna be showing close-ups later through further submissions (the nova up top is good enough on its own should I compose the crop right). And yes, top left is a nova, and there'll be a standalone version of that at a closer view coming soon.
the initial render can be viewed here
If you have any questions about the image, drop me a note or ask in the comment.
Feels good to be making art again
(this description is subject to change, I have a blank mind and forgot things I originally intended to put in)

what a nice job you have here.
still, there are a few things i don't like. i know this is not supposed to represent a fully realistic scene, and don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to attack your work, i'm just saying what i don't think that fits well in case you should try a trully realistic art piece.
from the top to bottom. amazing nova effect, a blast ring is perceptible, but a tiny planet reamains completelly unnafected, save a few bits of brightness. that doesn't add much to the scene.
Beautiful starfield, except a little detail on the mid-left part: three orange stars that look somewhat flat, and maybe a little brightless. this works well for the right part ones, as they're smaller, and thus, the flatness effect is not perceptible, maybe due to the fact that they look distant in comparation to others.
The Blast looks great, except the flying rocks, but ok, that has been said already. As for the steam.
I think the sky, on the bottom-left part, is too glowy. the gradient mid-point between orange and yellow is too far away from the horizon, in my opinion.
finally, the palmtree. awesome photomanipulation, but i think the shadow could be a little more to the left (to the clockwise direction, that is. ) My guess is that the angle formed with the nova is geometrically right, but as it's a vertical piece, the palmtree is saw in front of the volcanic blast, and thus, the shadow is compared to it's brightness, of which the shadow angle is not coincident.
Oh, and i think the canoe is a great complement to the composition.
that's all
by the way, i'm adding it to my favourites, i guess you don't mind

Icredible image for sure, but I think it would be better without the planet on the backgroud. Anyway, this is a great pic. ^^

Do you use brushes or textures for your clouds?
I would love to know, because I have HUGE trouble filling my sky, IMO its's my biggest downfall.

Awesome work dude!! The colours are so vivid, and the explosion/mushroom cloud is fucking amazing!!
My only crit is..... check out the left lava stream where it enters the sea; is there meant to be that vertical line in the steam cloud? (This could be a problem with the screen I'm using - shitty college CRT at 800x600!!)
Apart from that I can't find anything bad about it. The nebula/supernova thing is great - possibly one of your best!

shit man, u blow me away w/ ur pieces... EVERY ONE OF 'EM!
this is very sick.
great color scheme first of all.
the name goes very well w/ it.
the sky, brushing, and atmosphere are all very sexy.
the explosion firebal mushroom clouds are so realistic i'd swear this was a photo.
love the fx this has w/ the harsh disaster and then how you threw in the boat in... for some reason it gives calmness and serenity to the explosion on the other side.
the top nebulae giving off the light is damn wicked.
can i have a wp version?

and once again you have topped yourself
alyn, I love it when you take your time for your images, and then always come up with something original, new and powerful like this. indeed, powerful describes this image best, everything from it radiates power, mightyness, strength. alone the little boat is standing against the gigantic eruption and the nova.
as I told you before, the calm sea is quite unreal, yet I like this contrast of serenity against destruction and desaster.
the explosition has, as always, a great amount of detail, it looks very refined and real.... may I ask, did you actually paint it, or was it composed from stock photos?
hm, by the way, I must admit that it looks better with the planet, now that I see it big and finished, it would look odd, if I imagined it without the planet. but I think I have seen this planet before? in other works of you.
hm, my only real crit remains that mountain... the part left of the eruption is merging too much into the planet, so it looks as if the lava would origin in the air... and the mountain sides around the eruption are a little too covered with lava... which is also running to straight if you ask me, especially if I consider how the original terrain looked.
however, alyn, this is breathtaking, I bow in front of you
daniel
