Niv had been on her way home – honestly she had – but something curious had distracted her on the shores of western Alaska.

Hundreds of walruses had left the ice and gathered on beaches and islands in the Antarctic Circle. They were loud and heavy (and probably smelly although Niv could not tell for she no longer had an olfactory cavity). With the way the great blubbered mammals schlumped along the beach it was hard for Niv to believe they were any better in the water until she saw it with her own eyes.

The huddle of mating walruses held her attention for a few hours before she resumed her journey to the South Pole.
