This time when the temperature in the water dropped Niv sensed it and slowed her pace. It was cool and clear around her and she was reminded of the intense blue of the waters where she had awoken in this form. Had she wandered in the direction of home? A brief internal check revealed the pull for her own boundary was still there but the imaginary string binding her to where her old body had sunken into the intertidal seafloor was far to the south. No, this was not home. - TO BE CONTINUED - featured with Niv 189 GP Breakdown (189, 1601, 1671): More ARPG Art art © AmaranthineRain aka Kiri Rabina Ramdeo

- Day 8: Lonely -
310 word count
A splash caught Niv’s attention. Startled, she whirled, the blades of her bullwhip kelp swirling around her in a spherical cover. It was a move she had learned following after the playing sea otters.
A shark drifted past Niv, scars across its back and striations detailed the molted look of its skin, but it was slow-moving and sleepy. It could not have caused the splashed. Niv stared it down regardless. She would not let her guard down even for the tired creature that was hundreds of years old. Once it was clearly on its way she looked up.
Her gaze snagged on three esk communing above her. They treaded water leisurely, probably having allowed themselves to sink beneath the surface to be rocked by a gentle current. Two had some formations of rock on their backs but one had strands of kelp behind its shoulders – though a different species to Niv’s. These three, though different in color and build, seemed so at peace with each other in proximity that Niv thought of Scamper. The thought drew her senses inward; next to the tug she felt to the zone she had awakened in was an empty ache when she thought of Scamper.
What is this?
Niv watched the three communicating a few moments more, then lowered her head and undulated southwards.
Can anyone guess where they are? What do you think the land mass in the background is? Perhaps the shark is a clue?
Where do you think Niv will go next?

Man, the water looks good in this. Nice and subtle lighting

Thank you! That subtle lighting is more difficult that you would think compared to direct lighting.
thanks for all the faves!!

Yea, I know what you mean, harsh light is so easy to nail and make look good, but subtle lighting is just killer to get right

Yes! With harsh light you can pay attention to the shape of an object plainly. With soft light it's more.....fuzzy lol

Lovely pic ! I like especially the shape and colors of the water and the shark but I think that those curved lines at the left part are a bit flat, maybe adding more shading at the borders could help in that issue.
Good luck and keep going !

Thank you! Which curved lines are flat? The lighter lines on the surface of the water or the one dividing the above water section of the picture from the below water section?
Thank you for the critique!

I was talking about that curved lines next to the creature on the left part. Maybe is some kind of hair or tentacles, not sure...

Ooooh okay, I think I understand what you're saying. Of the group of three creatures at the surface, the one on the left has a pair of seaweed stalks trailing out behind it - but the stalks look too straight as it's underwater and next time I should make them wavy. That actually makes I lot more sense, I thought they were weird somehow when I finished the illustration. Thank you again for the critique, I very much appreciate suggestions on how to improve.

Ohhh I'm excited to see! I've also enjoyed these little mentions though, it shows her creator is still on Niv's mind and really builds interest in what is going to happen when they actually meet again.

You're so welcome - thank you for your help when I was developing Niv for approval! I like how different the body shapes for esk are - like 1671 is a bit more chunky and 189 is modeled after a beluga. It's great practice to play with the different ones!
