It had been weeks since Niv had awoken in the intertidal zone of Antarctica from a bloom of pain. Though she suffered Scamper showed her kindness. The smaller brown soothed her through her bouts of pain, talked her through the confusion, and gave her space when Niv needed it.

However, they could find no esk who could tell them what had happened to Niv. A few recalled the Icelandic sheep floating by on the patch of ship, but none had seen how she had gotten to be drifting in the southern hemisphere. There were a few esk from the nearby mainland that remembered seeing Niv grazing in the wilds. A human had called for her and she had gone to them, but no one had seen the human. Perhaps she had been his companion?

Some life, she thought. I’ve forgotten where I was and what I had been searching for. How tragic.

How terrible.

How...pitiful.

It must have been important if she had come down to the southern-most continent on her own. Why could she not remember?

Those seedlings of resentment grew in Niv until all Scamper could feel coming off her charge was a radiation of dissatisfaction and self-loathing.

Not a breeze disturbed the furnace of the day’s heat – at least hot for Antarctica – when Niv could not take it anymore.

“We aren’t going to find anyone and I have no purpose here!”

Scamper leaned against Niv’s leg as high as she could reach with their size difference. “It’s alright. You’ll find it. Not all of us figure it out at first. Some take time.”

“This long? No. I must not have one! You-you can’t help me! You should have let me go!”

You have no use.

“I’m just here to suffer the punishment for not accomplishing what I was meant to before! I-the light-the light must have been the way to make it up. You stopped me. You turned me into-into-into-whatever you are! You took me from the light!”

Niv’s raw emotions had the effect of thermal radiation to Scamper and she tried to send Niv the feeling of waves rolling past the glaciers. Please, she though, calm down, it’s alright!

Of course Niv did not hear her over the dark coil of her own internal voice.

Look at you, lonely little thing. You did not deserve what you had before.

That’s right, suffer! You did so poorly before.

Your past life was all pain and regret – you probably caused all of it!

You are incomplete.

You cannot absolve yourself, you can only suffer the consequences.

Niv thrashed internally, rebelling against the voices.

A bullwhip kelp snaked between Niv and Scamper and, when it flexed with Niv’s mood, Scamper was knocked away. She was pushed across the snow so far that she rolled onto the sand and bumped against the overturned boat she had found when she had awoken in her four-legged body. She flopped to her side, panting at the power of Niv’s feelings.

To her credit Niv stood stunned, the bullwhip kelp had frozen above her mid-thrash when she had realized what she had done. The stalks and blades looked as though they were caught in the middle of a storm, currents curling the blade and bowing the stalks.

All Scamper had done was help her and Niv was just hurting her.

She could not keep doing this to Scamper. She had to leave before she hurt more. She turned and heaved her blue body into the frigid waves.

“Niv!” Scamper scrambled to her feet. “Niv, wait! Come back!”

Niv dove away from the twisting feeling inside her that warped the love and kindness from Scamper. It was hard enough to change yourself, let alone another and Scamper had tried and failed to fight against the initial confusion and pain Niv had embraced.

This was all Niv was – this was all she knew.

Deeper and deeper she swamp, fleeing the roiling despair of not being able to make up for unknown past sins until the oblivion of the cold dark depths absorbed her.

I miss drawing this angsty esk.

Thank you! Yeah, she's having a rough start to her new life

I'll get better! Luckily her destructive tendencies are self-directed. Who knows, maybe she'll be an abnormal traveller one day.
