- Day 6: Warmth -
316 word count

Niv no longer felt the cold or the heat – at least, not in the way of living things.

Down in the depths of the ocean she had ‘felt’ pleasantly cool. It had been all that quiet both around her and inside her that had soothed her fury. But then the darkness had seeped into her and she knew had to move before the anger followed it in again.

Once on the surface she had traced the waterways, winding inland via tributaries and rivers. So long as she touched the water and kept moving she felt pleasantly neutral. She lost count of the places she explored but each location made an impression on her and she felt she would be able to find her way back in a blink.

One day she paused in the waters just off the shore of Prince William Sound after the sky changed from soft pink to clear blue. She was enjoying the feel of a different type of giant kelp rub against her, winding around the tall stalks underwater, when a raft of sea otters wriggled within range. At first she was startled and intended to abandon the area to them, but their exuberance drew her closer. When adolescents began a race through the kelp forest she followed them, copying some of their maneuvers. When they dove with the adults to retrieve urchins, crabs, and abalone she trailed them and watched them crack open their prey to scrape out the meat. When a pup chirped in protest of its mothers grooming administrations Niv felt a tickle on the inside, something that bubbled up from where the knot usually was but this felt more…pleasant.

As afternoon turned to twilight, Niv floated nearby, soaking in the warmth of energy vibrating around the sea otters even as they slept among the kelp bed, holding each other to keep from becoming separated by the current.

Otters are ornery little things.  I got to hold one once.  They are pretty heavy for their size.

They are that too xD They look like they'll be heavy - at least to me.

In comparison of a ferret or cat of the same size, they are very heavy.  The one I held also kept sniffing me with it's whiskery face.

Goodness. I wonder why they're so dense - maybe because their weight is attributed to muscle and organs and bones? They don't have much fat or blubber.

I was rather surprised to tell the truth.  I'm no expert on otters but compared to ones on nature shows and the zoo she didn't look fat.   I wondered if it was part of the body build to help them with swimming under water.

Hm, that sounds plausible. If you find anything on it let me know. Most of what I looked up just says "otters are heavy, they weigh this much" I'd have to dig more into anatomy and their make up.

They are pretty interesting.  And ornery, did I mention ornery.  They are like river ferrets.
