- Day 9: Whisper -

Niv was on land when the violent storm hit.

Floodwaters spilled over from the rivers of the region in such mass that Niv and a doe searching for her fauns were swept into a large lake. Niv allowed the squabbling currents to roll her, glad to be submerged in water again, though it did not feel the same as her marine biome.

While watching the storm clouds Niv spotted a black, bird-like esk that moved slowly across the water’s surface. Something about the way it walked seemed hitched, almost mechanical, and there was an eerie air to the thing that penetrated the water and sent a chill down Niv’s spine. Out of nowhere ringing started in her mind and Niv hunched against it. The sound became distorted and rose above the dull thunder of both the floodwaters and the storm. Niv suspected the discord originated from the esk – and there was something peculiar happening at the end of its tail… When a current pulled Niv closer to the surface she undulated out of it until she was carried deeper and away from the deeply disturbing esk.

A doe tumbled through the water, carried closer to the slender esk by the flood. Niv had only a moment to predict their collision before a burst of energy from the great glowing mask of the dark esk forced her to turn away. When she looked back there was a new esk below the slender one. It was palest purple with a dark mask and built vaguely like a reindeer. Its tail was dark, much longer than Niv’s own, and pale flowers grew along the marking on its flank.

The new esk hung frozen in the water for a moment and when Niv turned to observe the dark esk she found it had disappeared! Just like that she had lost track of the creepiest esk she had met yet, though she was glad the ringing had faded to whispers – or perhaps those were the whimpers of the newly transformed esk…
