Niv looked up at the ethereal lights from her perch high in the Arctic mountains and missed home.

She missed the penguins waddling down to the water and the earless seals that carved through the ice. She missed the albatross that flew in from miles away with the other birds and the orcas that came to hunt. Even the swarms of krill, fish, and bivalves tugged at her heartstrings – and the dopey faces of the elephant seals. She even missed the terns and Scamper.

If not for Scamper I would not be in pain.

No, that was not right. That was an old thought and Vetru had helped her sort through the old and the new. Niv pictured Scamper the first time she saw her: treading water before her in the intertidal zone. She pictured scamper telling her of the conservatory, showing her pictures and the feeling of how to get there.

If not for Scamper I would not be able to experience the world from this perspective.

She pictured Scamper’s hurt look when Niv had railed at her. Nivs head had been grating with the pain of anger and confusion – the overwhelming sadness and sense of loss – the need to see and to know more. Then Niv remembered the compassion she had refused to recognize as she swam away, leaving Scamper on the tundra coastline miles away.

If not for Scamper I would not be able to honor Kristjan’s memory. I would not have a home to come back to.

Home. Perhaps it was time to go home to the southern lights.
