The temple was ancient stone carved on an outcrop where it withstood the beating spray from Bali’s turquoise waves. There were smaller shrines up and down the coast and a village nearby, but Niv stood in the white spray while the people walked up and down the steps, oblivious.

Niv allowed the water to wash along her sides and sighed. The longer she stood in the place where the water collided with the land, the higher her kelp raised, the gentler the bullwhip blades waved. As much as she hated being bound to the intertidal zone the feeling of home within the boundary helped ease the anger and confusion – and she was tiring of the combined emotions searing her insides.

A gathering of humans near a seaside wall of the temple drew Niv’s curiosity. The members were dressed differently in styles she had seen all over the world. Why were they gathered around one who was gesturing?

“…on a mission to spread Hinduism and arrived in our beautiful Bali in 1489. Although he shared his teachings with the villagers Nirartha faced adamant opposition from the village chief. When the chieftain gathered his loyal followers to expel Dang Hyang Nirartha, Nirartha shifted the boulder he mediated on into the sea. As Nirartha moved the rock among the spray his sashes transformed into sea snakes that guarded the base…”

Niv cocked her head as she listened to the story. She peered into the temple grounds and immediately focused on a statue of a man with four arms riding some sort of sea monster. Niv had seen likenesses of the sea monster in muddy rivers and everglades. The monster was raised up in a defensive pose and they were pictured at the top of a shrine in the painting, one that bore the likeness to sea temple.

Niv stayed to listen to the bells ring and witness prayers, then turned again for the ocean to feed a rising hunger of wanderlust.
