Description Moriarty from Hayao Miyazaki's/Studio Ghibli's Meitantei Holmes/Sherlock Hound. Ordinarily I depict him faithfully in the anime style but now I am experimenting around with a style to which I am more naturally inclined. Also reducing his goofiness factor back to the way it was when Miyazaki himself directed....a goofines factor which the Italian RAI (or was it TMS?) television animation studio played up a bit too much when they took over latter episodes of the series.

If you look back WAYYYY back in my gallery I drew this guy a LOT lol. Having a return stroke of sorts.... yes, he's supposed to be a long muzzled wolf according to Miyazaki. X3

Forced myself to sketch this as I am suddenly in a horrible slump.... so yeah. Almost more an obligatory exercise to keep from stopping drawing, even tho it's a poopy cartoon sketch.

I would be blessed and happy to be apart of it! I love Sherlock Hound, I consider it the best adaptation in theme to the Holmes books than anything else, personally. It's a huge inspiration for my webcomic, too, even if the bulk of it is more GMD-based. :3

Thank you!

It takes many liberties with Doyle canon, but in a way that is quite touching and compelling, yes. Doesn't hurt that it's Hayao Miyazaki's/Studio Ghibli's brainchild :3

I also love GMD, it's quite dear to my heart. Glad to hear I hooked you up with a fanbase you will enjoy!

Thanks so much! Do you mind giving me a brief synopsis of Keeping Up with Thursday? Is it a period piece serial set in Victorian England, or...?

I wonder, are you a fan of Black Butler? I have a love-hate relationship with it, but one of its positive elements is its incredible grasp of late nineteenth-century historical settings.

Ari-Dynamic In reply to AmberPalette [2011-12-10 03:41:02 +0000 UTC]

Certainly.

I wrote the comic to be a throwback mostly to the animated cartoons of the past; the setting is like a cross between American Tail and GMD, but cartoons from the likes of Tex Avery, Hannah Barbera, are referenced. Not directly, of course, but in tandem. Mice characters are personifications of their predecessors too, which I'm hoping to get into detail through various side-stories along the way (i.e. Svenn, one of the government/parliament concious characters, is like a nod and jab at the ill-fated Capitol Critters cartoon).

The story is about the trials and tribulations, adventures, of two mice named Patrick and Vinnie. Patrick is intended to be a Cockney-accented mouse thief, who will go out of his way to steal anything from his his own fellow critters, cats, and dogs - though he has set his sights on making elaborate thefts too, as well, from humans and hiests far more bigger than him. He's shown to have a natural talent for plotting, planning, and executing various thefts around London, no matter how big or small. :3

Vinnie is his partner, a visitor from America who left his family due to hostile bitter opinions regarding the Civil War. I wouldn't call him the Dr. Watson archetype; he left his family when he couldn't stand how detached and apart his family was, regarding the North and the South, and booked ship to the UK (I'm hoping to explain why next month for next year for Issue 5). Although Patrick saved his life on his first few weeks, the thief has not been quite the person he wants to see himself with any longer. The main storyline I'm doing details the intensity about two completely different people, and the impact herein their parting happens.

Although the main storyline now focuses mostly on them confronting each other and the results of that, I intend to have Patrick go out on adventures outside of London and maybe around the world, hopefully.

The entire come for the most part is both tribute, homage, parody and pastiche of Disney and Bluth. It won't be too kid friendly, and I'm hoping to work on a more mature, adult-themed work. Nothing too crazy, but enough so that it doesn't feel like a fan-fiction or just a love letter to the trends it's supporting.

Patrick has a bit of distaste in Holmes because, in the setting of KUWT - the cats/dogs/mice/other animals - all share a common class amongst each other. Certainly, the mice are ranked in the bottom, but so are some dogs, who serve as the police, and cats, who are high among royalty and criminal law enforcers in a sense. It'll be stated soon that Patrick's long-enforced reign since a child has caused the criminal activity to rise up, even going so far as to overcrowd prisons, that everyone wants him dead. He has to juggle peer relations while trying to keep his spot from being taken over by others, or debunked entirely. He's got all of UK after him.

The mention of Holmes is brief, but Patrick admits to not liking him due to the amount of fans that he had once his book came out. xD At that point, the critters all started to try to imitate him, leading even to a Basil the Great series of parody characters, all trying to compete and bring Patrick down.

I'm pretty ambitious with it, in the hope that I can get something out of it. My tools are limited, but I'm trying to push the boundaries of it as long as I can till my computer dies. xD

It's very intriguing that you pay homage to other American cartoon classics as you form your own continuity. Wow, I even remember the Capitol Critters pilot. I think I was still in elementary school!

It's unusual too and yet certainly in vogue to portray two (from what I gather) anti-hero types who don't even get along, and whose redemptive qualities need to be dug for and not discovered until one has gone through a substantial part of the series.

Your species caste concept is also interesting, and certainly inspires the same dismay in a contemporary socially conscious audience as would commentary on national and racially-based class struggle at the end of the nineteenth century.

You will probably encounter mixed reception (or perhaps already have) of a "not-kid-friendly" cartoon series that is in a Western animation style. It's intriguing, mature content in anime is completely accepted and even welcomed both by Eastern and Western audiences, and there seems to be no trouble accepting anime as an art form as though with a connoisseur's eye. And yet Western animation struggles constantly to be perceived as something beyond "mere entertainment." These are unfair double standards that I hope you can surmount. It always upset me the way my favorite childhood Western animation, the Saturday morning Sonic the Hedgehog show, was received. It was a true gem, but cancelled after two seasons because it was rated as "too dark" for children in many parts (and indeed was, though I turned out okay ).

Lol, the concept of a series of Basil wanna-bes chasing your Patrick around is quite amusing.

I will try to read your series, though I must confess my plate is full with graduate school (I'm a semester and a half away from a PhD in art history). If you ever want to chat about Sherlock Hound et al, I'd be glad to.

Oh by the way, I asked but you didn't answer, but have you heard of the anime Black Butler? I know you specialize in Western cartoons, but since you like Sherlock Hound, which is an anime, I figured you had nothing against anime period piece work.

Ari-Dynamic In reply to AmberPalette [2011-12-10 21:23:35 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately while I do watch anime, I haven't heard of Black Butler. This is the first time I've actually heard about it, lol! xD For a moment I assumed you meant the one called 'Blackjack', which I used to watch back when it was on an anime channel I used to have on cable for a brief period. I might look it up though, if I can find it in manga form at the library, perhaps. Is it good?

I still admire anime, although I don't watch a lot of it as much as I used to, mainly for lack of cable access. D: And funds too, to really go beyond the dial-up I've got right now. xD Most of the stuff I can get now are video rentals or library pick-ups in the form of Cowboy Bebop, Lupin III, some Conan Detective, mostly Studio Ghibli works, with a little bit of Maison Ikkoku on the side. :3 A lot of their storytelling techniques, the fact that they can provide a story for older adults with themes not often brushed on in cartoons like they used to, have been a big influence on KUWT. And you're absolutely right, too; these days, the only kinda of serious-minded cartoons out there are limited solely to Marvel/DC superhero offshoots. xD ...which is a shame, really, because we could learn a lot from that, without needing to copy Butch Hartman or Total Drama Island/My Little Pony too hard.

:3 Heheh, yeah, I'm hoping to play against the common conventions atypical in cartoons: the violence won't be hidden away, the characters have their own agendas without being in tradition to familiar mice or characters before them, in one of the pages to my side comic, Patrick even muses the notion that cheese is very unhealthy, haha. xD The farther away I can avoid it from being a clone from predecessors, the better I think it can be - it's one of the reasons I don't think I'm in the position to change my art style, or tools, even. I don't think my style particularly invokes a very close similarity to other's. I'm only using generic Flash (the program says MX 2004, but a friend and I couldn't get future models to work on it, so it may either be that or Flash 4 or 6) and a mouse tool.

I can definitely concur that it hasn't been easy trying to bring KUWT into the light, that it has, a few more times than none - driven me a little crazy. *gush* xD I think yesterday actually brought along some heat when a group moderator for an artistic visuals group told me completely outright that my comic looks a lot like fan art, and they only want 'original' material. I kinda snapped, because I was like, "You're gonna tell me that after 345 days that I've been running this, that all these characters, classes, personalities, jokes and gags is NOT mine?" KUWT and 'fan' anything don't go together. xD I disdain having it called that. It'll be a long road before I can convince others.

I did, however, get one optimistic review from a friend of mine, who reviewed it for me on his forum for his webcomic review series. While he wasn't sure about the tone of the story, he did praise the artwork, and told me to touch up the scenes a little (one of my biggest flaws for the period of the previous issues was not clearly explaining some of the events, so now I'm focused on giving a clearer picture, in the hopes to straighten KUWT out to be readable). He did tell me that it has a lot of potential, and could be something good in the long run if I work hard on it. That alone and the confidence of my peers, peer relations, has given me hope to really push the limits of what I have and bring KUWT out more, and improve it as well as myself. Any kinds of reviews, critique, is always welcome. :3 I'm always happy to hear it.

Hehehehe. x3 Now I wanna try and find the side quicky comic I wrote of Patrick lamenting to Vinnie about having to deal with "Hampton the Bestest Detective" and his "companion chess piece, Reginald Fatagain, Hampton's only real enemy", lmao. xD Another thing I've always been tickled about poking fun of was the fan/fanon community; not just GMD, but fan worship in general. I think at one point while on a GMD group, one of the people I met was crazy enough to try and 'sue' me over one of her fan-characters. Patrick disdains having people clamor over him, but he does love the attention and popularity.

Oh wow! :3 That's really amazing! Feel free to stop on by to chat, to talk Hound or GMD, KUWT, anytime you wish! I'd be very happy to make a new friend here on deviantArt. Take all the timeyou need with KUWT really; I don't think there'll be a time for me to stop it; even throughout the ups and down this year, I'd like to think that when I started the very beginning in December 2010, I think the years after this year will be intense, tough, but exciting nonetheless. :3

It's always a pleasure meeting new people. :3 Although my plate isn't too full myself, hehe, I still want to give you the gift of some Hound artwork. I'd have to get the soundtrack again that I once owned before a PC hard drive clean-out to get in the mood again, but I'd love to do it! I also gotta find the picture I drew way early into the year. xD

Actualleh I saw a Hallmark Entertainment episode (not based on any of the original book stories but still GOOD) called "Whitechapel Vampire" and it's about this crazy monk who goes around with a farmer's two pronged hoe murdering people using it and pretending a vampire did it <<; and for some reason I always want to stick the Meitantei Holmes characters in this plot with Holmes and Moriarty teamed up....and there's this scene where a character catches the culprit and has a very snarky way of using a Bible verse against the monk lol...and I always see Moriarty saying it:

Cuplrit monk: "Brother, you have sinnnnned..." *starts to attack*
Moriarty in monk disguise: *turns around with gun aimed at cuplrit monk's forehead* " 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.' " *BLAM*

MUAHAHAHHAHAHA....
