Description
EDIT: Someone on the message board pointed out I'd missed a picture, so I added it.First of all, none of this is my work! These are all still frames from "The Land Before Time" (copyright Universal/Don Bluth). Or rather, these would have been still frames, had they been in the film...
It's a well known fact now that a lot of footage was cut from LBT for various reasons - the Sharptooth fight being too scary is one of them - but several scenes have been identified by various people on the web, and in fact, some scenes still can be seen (albeit in bad quality) on Youtube as a part of two old commericals played when the film first released.
All of the sources for these images and other discussion about this comes from this webpage; [link] , I reproduce it here purely so that the scenes that we have visual evidence of can be quickly referenced by people (while some of the pictures are listed on the first page of that Message Board Thread, many others are listed throughout. Much easier to group things together).
For more information on deleted scenes, either check out that link, or search my DeviantArt page for the three Soundtrack Analyses I did, where I listened to the soundtrack and the film and noted where the music differed - for example, the "Original Ending" can be heard in Track 6: The Rescue/Discovery Of The Great Valley.
Those two trailers are these:

Is it really something that can be petitioned for, though? The original footage wasn't preserved, and someone would basically have to reanimate the whole thing and/or record new dialogue...

Don't be so sure, there's always possibility that videotape of the work prints have been saved by the director. A video leak of cut shots from Charlie's nightmare in "All Dog's Go to Heaven" was found after all, it could be just like that.

This might need an update. There have been numerous new cels and other images discovered since this was posted in 2011. I'll start by linking just a few of these down below.
Sharptooth jumpscare Β (cropped version)
Petrie during travel montage (also backed up by script)
Some concept art showing deleted scenes:
Littlefoot and Cera carried by mud (they will hit into Sharptooth's foot as we know)

Ah, brilliant! Sorry for the late reply, was dealing with some other things...but this is really cool! There probably isn't really a need for this file of mine anymore; it'd probably make more sense to just make one big mega-page of deleted scene information on that Wiki...

BTW: The first movie has a far darker atmosphere then any of the direct to video and DVD sequels. For some reason it reminds me a bit of "Bambi" at some point, mostly because Littlefoot's mother dies.

So: If they thought they would have made this movie less "dark" with all those cuts, then they were wrong.

Culu-Bluebeaver [2014-11-15 19:25:04 +0000 UTC]
I always had this "weird feeling" something was missing in the movie because of the ending when they find the great valley. When Littlefoot calls the others and they run to him through that "tunnel". This scene looks choppyΒ at some point and so does the first Sharptooth attack.
I wish they would finally realize a full-length version of this movie with restored colours on blue-ray. That would be amazing.

They'd probably need to get someone to reanimate and dub in the missing scenes, but it would certainly be doable if someone had enough time and money...I'm reminded of how fans of Phantom of the Paradise discovered most of the missing scenes in a vault somewhere and stuck them online for people to see, and then other people made a fan edit of the film that put all of that back in!Β

Heh, not really, since I'm in New Zealand, but wonderful, if you did! There's people on the Gang of Five forum who'd be keen to hear from you if you still have the tape...they've been searching for a copy that might have slipped through the cracks (supposedly theatres or TV stations in Scandinavia aired it uncensored).Β
Unfortunately, I'm more inclined to believe that it might just be wishful thinking after this long...but if a copy shows up, I'll happily eat my words!

Belatedly, I spent that afternoon googling it and reading the forum and I'm somewhat less sure because I also had all the books. It would have been gotten through my grandmother's AVON, I think. Red banding on the side of the VHS box, I think it was an CIC release from the UK that later slipped to the US.
OTOH, I am apparently one of the few kids who grew up with the unedited The Last Unicorn, because my copy of that was ALSO from the AVON/CIC distribution chain, and only later did I find out that most everyone grew up with a version where the Harpy's tits were cut out of frame and they cut some of the cursing. So I don't know if that helps or not.

Yes, I'm familiar with those scenes, but as far as I know there aren't any images of that and other scenes, so I haven't mentioned them here. But I do mention them in my LBT soundtrack analysis deviations...I listened to the soundtrack, then compared that to the movie to see what bits got cut (such as a short segment that would appear to correspond with the fight scene) or rearranged (the penultimate track matches the descriptions of the original ending, where Littlefoot found the Great Valley first and then went back).

It's a Shame that we'll Probably Won't Find These Deleted Scenes/Footage in High Quality Anywhere.
I have to Agree on How Don Bluth was Very Displeased with the Editing Process, and This has been his Shortest Film to Date.
Plus, I wouldn't Mind If an Animated Film is Rated PG or Something, They Shouldn't Release the Extra Footage on Home Video Releases When they Could. It's Also a Shame That most of the DS was either Lost or Destroyed, a Horrible Fate Like How "The Black Cauldron" Suffered.
But to My Knowledge the Only G-Rated Movie I could Rely on is Don Bluth's "The Secret of NIMH"(Which is of Course My Personal Favorite Animated Flick).
This Editing Process Also Occured on DB's Classic "All Dogs go to Heaven", SHAME!

Allot of these look just so familiar... I remember a few years ago when I was about 9 I watched this movie on demand. It seems like I saw the waterfall scene and the scene were the sharptooth attacked the thorn bush.... I might be imagining those but I know for a fact that I saw the berry scene and ducky scene when I was very young. Watching it now it doesn't have nearly the eerieness as it used to...like it's only half as long as it was before.

If you've still got that copy, it might be worth sending it (or the link, if it was on demand) to one of the people on the Gang of Five message board...they've been on the lookout for unedited versions of the film that might have these missing scenes.

I wish I could...but that vhs is broken, and it's not on demand anymore, I spend 2 hours looking for it. However the 1988 vhs is only 4$ on amazon, but I'm under 18 so I can't buy it myself.

I have a theory for the frame at the very, very bottom right. It appears to display an unrecognizable grey dinosaur splashing around in the water/mud. Could this perhaps be one of the rumoured dinosaurs the group came across in the deleted "Green food" sequence? Or was it just a frame from the kid's story version?
π: 0 β©: 1
AMCAlmaron In reply to RockinRavenclaw [2011-08-13 04:02:19 +0000 UTC]
Dunno. I think the people on the forum concluded that the shots of Littlefoot & Spike are from the scene where they rescue Cera from the Pachycephalosauruses, but the rest seems to be from something else entirely. Perhaps it's an amalgamation of various cels? Your guess is as good as mine.

I also found a few more frames of cut footage, though I'm not sure if you've seen them. Go here: [link] and watch the scene at about 5 seconds in.

No, I haven't! Thanks for that; I've passed it on to the people at the forum.
I mentioned on the forum a while back the possiblity that the ten minutes of cut Sharptooth scenes might not have all been the fight; some might have been Littlefoot and Cera fleeing from him before his Mother came to the rescue. This is fairly good proof for that.

RockinRavenclaw In reply to AMCAlmaron [2011-08-13 22:20:49 +0000 UTC]
You're very welcome, and yes, I too found it extremely far-fetched to believe that all of the cut footage was from the battle. Besides, when you observe this scene it has the same atmosphere as when Littlefoot and Cera came across the Sharptooth by themselves.

MarmoraKeef In reply to RockinRavenclaw [2013-09-11 16:19:47 +0000 UTC]
I think the footage at 5 seconds is when they first encounter Sharptooth at the mud pit. His heavy step probably made a wave that washed them back onto his foot as they fled.Β
At least that's what I think.
