Description
This creature is a Basilisk, which is not related with that kind of Iguana, really. It's a mix of rooster and snake, as you can see... there are several interpretations in the accident medieval bestiary books about how the creature should looks like. That's because it has scales in red, green and yellow, as well as the fangs and such... But it's basically my own interpretation. Basilisk could kill other creature with its own view, that's the reason of those big and glowing eyes I've put on it.Note: I've seen many people here is telling this is a "cockatrice" and not a basilisk... I do not care. I always knew this beast as "basilisk", no matter how many medieval bestiary books and myths enciclopeides I've read. Besides: there is no word in my native tongue for coaktrice. So stop to correct me.
I've done this pic with Painter-6 mostly, but it has a bit of Photosop-6. I sed for the pic an sketch I did at job, when I hadn't hard job. And I like the result

The basilisk and cockatrice are exactly the same thing. Or at least they were, until Harry Potter changed it o_o; Lovely work, love those spurs.

So... Is HP's fault, really?
I always learned about Basilisk like the monster I portrayed here; cockatrice is a totally new word for me. Even Medieval Bestiary books, basilisk is like that.
Thank you for the explication. Glad you like this piece.

I read in a book (Dragon Rider) that the basilisk was a chicken-looking-thing. You did a very good job!

Don't be silly that's not a basilisk, that's a cockatrice, well accourding to my 'big book of fantasy animals' anyway.

Whoa! So cool!
It looks like it wants to peck someone's eyes out, but then again by the time it got that close its victim would already be dead from looking it in the eye...
Anyway I really like the eyebrows and forelegs/wings!

Well--- thanks, I guess.
I haven't reat HP novels, so I don't know what's the description of a Basilisk... But for this pic, I felt inspired on accident bestiary books, mostly.

You're welcome!
In the HP books, they're basically just humongous serpents with big fangs that can kill with their sight and die if they hear the crow of the rooster. :3 And the male has a big scarlet plume on his head.

Nice! I like the claws on his wings and the wispy eyebrow things. Scary looking.
Basilisk and Cockatrice are interchangeable. The two terms appeared at about the same time. Various role playing and card games have made a distinction where the myth never did. See the differences in Specter and Ghost in D&D.
If you look up Basilisk in the dictionary it will quite literally read "see Cockatrice"

Wow.. that's so awesome.. I'm sorry to say that I'm with the others in saying this is a Cockatrice
but don't worry; that's alright.
Yeah, it seems like Cockatri(plural?) and Basilisks are both the result of a chicken and a reptile. Supposedly the creature who lays on and hatches the egg determines whether the offspring is a Basilisk or a Cockatrice. The chicken would make the chicken genes more prominant while the reptile who did the same would make the reptilian genes more prominant. Anywho.. I'm finished now. I couldn't resist.
Very awesome pic! I love the colors you used.

artemis-prime [2004-03-11 11:48:27 +0000 UTC]
Basilisks are fully reptilian. Cockatrices are the ones with the rooster thrown in (hence the name.)
Now, with that set aside...
Now THERE'S a scary looking creature! Great job on the colouring! ^_^
(Beasties Skyfire looks up at Cyrway and whispers, "I don't look like that, do I?")

Basilisk VS Cockatrices? Well, I don't know what's the second creature, but I always knew "Basilisk" (the mythological one) as a mix of snake and rooter... YOu know: a rooter had an egg on a pile of shit, and later, that egg was incuved by a snake. And that's the result...
Again, I've seen many interpretations of this creature

Love the picture dude, but if you would allow me to beard for just a moment... that's a picture of a Cockatrice, a Balisk also turns what it looks at to stone but it's more of a giant lizard type thing.
