Description *Featured here: [link]

When the first European explorers met Pygmy (sp?) tribe in African forests, they found Pigneans called horses as "Okapi". Soon, they learned "okapi" was a new different animal, and at first, they thougth it was some type of zebra. In the end, Okapi happens to be a new mammal specie related with Giraffes.
Okapi is one of those popular but very rare and beautiful species. I only saw one of those a couple of times in the Madrid's Zoologic park. That's why I drew this couple of Okapis: I love to draw unusual species The big one is male; it has a couple of horns on its forehead; and the one of the background is a female, it hasn't horns.
I drew this pic using several photos as reference, and it's painted using watercolours. Okapi's very colouring and the strips was the harder thing t draw. This pic is a little old, but still being interesting.

***

I love okapi! I've always wanted to paint with watercolors! Did you use watercolor paints that come in a tube, jar, or one of the cheapish tray things like Crayola or something? Just wondering. Also, another difference between male and female okapi are their size: Females are larger!

I also love okapi. They're a cool mix of jiraffe and zebra, and their skin is among of the softer ones I've touched. I didn't know about that difference, but males have horns
And I used dry watercolours in paste, not tube. The traditional ones.

I love how there is a definite difference between the male and the female. the female is just... beautiful. i wonder if there really is a difference between the genders... i am embarrassed to say that i don't know!

thanks for knowing what an okapi is, and for the wonderful art!

Thank you for your coments.
Well, actually female okapi hasn't horns, and male okapi has horns. At first, that's the only difference.

Wow! I like the texture of their skin! It looks so velvety and yet muscular!

... by the way, I always remember about Okapi, whenever I see animated version of Energon Prowl...

Yeah! Okapi' skin is velvet. I touched one as a child and I was amazed how soft its skin was
But, what's the relationship between Energon Prowl and an Okapi

ThorleKye In reply to Ameban [2005-02-05 15:46:32 +0000 UTC]

I envy you for having being able to stroke Okapi! I never had...
As for Energon Prowl (his TV version), I somehow always thought him as having Okapi-kind of face... I do not know why I ever resistered him as so... I only know I like them both!

I THINK I heard of these before, but I'm not exactly so sure. My Zoo-ology is abit behind the times most likely. Regardless, excellent work. I definetly like the coloring. What did you use out of curiousity?

Ameban In reply to in-fluid-silence [2005-02-04 17:35:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's a rare specie, so you wouln't be surprise if you can see any of them in your zoologic park. I only saw one and I don't remember if it's male or female
As for your question. I used watercolours.

That figures, you get such great results with something I cannot use well, haha. Well regardless, excellent work.
