Hmmm...
If the prey species are intended to land on its back, how does it deliver the killer lancing with its jaws under its body?

I think he's still trying to move the prey under the abdomen. And there he has a long proboscis.

Hey that's an interesting idea I must say! Especially caught my eye because I've seen like three different species where I live: ambush(my favorite), milkweed, and another skinny one with a proboscis like this guy.
I do like this theory. But once the insect lands on his back, how dose he get'em to his mouth?

Thank you! Well, I think he eats, poking its proboscis between the legs. That is, the prey will be under his belly.

Oh, so he doesn't give the pollinating insect a chance to land on him, thinking he's a flower?

I'm not sure that shield could screw up in such a way that it looked like a petal. Still shield - a part of the thorax, almost motionless, and the head can be rotated. However, the idea understandable

That upper middle petal... I could easily see it developing from an inflation of the scutellum rather than of the head like that.
