Simbati:

Buffalo:

-----

Simbati felt her paws squish into spongy ground and grimaced at the feeling. The mud caked uncomfortably between her toes, but she daren't complain. This place was too swampy for her liking, and what grass there was seemed to grow in clumps. It attracted other animals, prey animals. Her target was a dangerous beast, one no lion should ever hunt alone: the cape buffalo. Many a lioness had been mortally wounded on the horns of this black giant, but if the pride could succeed in bringing one down it would feed them for days.

Using the thick mists and clumps of grass to her advantage, Simbati stalked one buffalo in particular, her gaze intense on the bigger animal...

For

The first official challenge of the group: draw your character hunting a buffalo - during the morning, in swampy settings. I fear I may have missed the mark entirely, though I did enjoy working on this a lot!

There are some things wrong I'm aware of ... like Simbati being too big/too close to her prey. Also, she looked a lot less... unbalanced before the grass covered her paws. She was supposed to be leaning a little, but not that much.

I'm not too pleased with the background in general. Ah well. Better luck next time I suppose... originally the grass was golden/yellow, but I decided to make it green at the last minute - I might change it back.

I think this looks really good! -especially the fog; it's very nice how part of the grass is clear and not all is bleached out (makes it look very realistic).
What bothers me a bit about the lioness though isn't really that she's too big but more that she looks sorta sad -maybe that could be changed when you opened her mouth to show some teeth (lions usually seem to stalk stuff with open jaws...for some weird reason >> )

Thanks for the thoughtful comment.

I think a lot of the "sad" look comes from the markings above her eyes and on her brow - they make it look very shaded and kinda furrowed like she's worried, even though they're not. I get what you're saying, but lions don't always stalk with their mouth open - a lot of pictures do, though. Probably from the heat. A lot of lionesses also have their lips pulled down kind of tight as they focus forward. Most of the references I used had the mouth closed, so that was what I went with. I think having the mouth open probably wouldn't have been a bad idea either, though...

Very nice picture! Personally, I think the buffalo should still be in focus because it's a main part of the picture, perhaps you could use other tactics to create depth instead. Also, I think the grass looks just a tad too uniform. But really, great picture! The lioness has such an intense stare, very atmospheric!

Thanks for the input! I appreciate it! Yeah, I kinda played with the picture and considered that when I applied the blur effect. I also tried flipping it so the lioness was out-of-focus instead... but the more I thought about it, I realized that I really wanted her to be the focus - this is her hunt after all. But even though the crispness does sort of make her the focus, you're right: the buffalo is really too big and dark to not be the focal point. So now I don't know what I've got!

This is amaaazing! you've done a great job with the setting, all foggy morning with a gorgeous light and colours. And the blurred focus on the bufalo. Very intense, I feel she is just about to jump on him D: her eyes are so determined, and hungry!

Haha, maybe next time we should organize a collaborative hunt.

Great entry 8)

Aww, thankees! I was having fun with it. I was almost disappointed to cover up Simbati's pose, and the buffalo, with grass and fog. But I wanted it to make sense - she wouldn't be hunting it out in the open.

A collaborative hunt would be fun to draw too!

Yeah, I know that feeling, but in order to grow as an artist, I've learned you have to sacrifice part of the things you like to make the whole piece a better one! like when you shade and have to obscure some pretty parts. But yes, a good way around it, and to please your effort is nice to upload, like you did, the individual character appart 8)

Yeah, we'll do that in the future!

True, true. ^_^ And also tried something new with the blur-effect. A both like and dislike it... for a couple reasons. It focuses attention on Simbati, but... the buffalo is a big, dark mass in the image. So it seems it should naturally be in focus. <_<' Which has been pointed out to me. ><

Is not exactly natural to be in focus just because it is important.

In photography you have the option of: 1. choosing focus or 2. having eveything on focus. So naturally you can choose any of this options in digital painting. The out of focus gives it a different kind of drama, and giving prior attention to the hunter instead of the prey.

Here, everything is in focus: [link]
The buffalo out of focus: [link]

Well, what I say is that I like it, which is an opinion. I say it isn't incorrect, which is a fact. Do it however you like it better ^_^

Well, I think it looks amazing! I love the fog effect and her hunting stare. You can definitely see she's ready to take a bite out of the buffalo...Assuming the buffalo lets her. Cape buffalo are violent, aggressive guys so I hope she survives the encounter lol.

Thanks! I'm glad to hear that, 'cause I was trying to get that captured at least.

And yes, Cape buffalo are. Once you get them going, they'll stomp all over you and then some 'til you're dead. And by "you" I mean lions, whether the lions were threatening them or not.

I wanted to assume she was hunting with the pride, but I didn't draw any of them in - though I think now maybe I should've.

It is pretty dangerous for a lone lioness to be hunting a full-grown Cape buffalo. But then, maybe the others are just flanking it off-screen. Or maybe it's sicker than it appears.

Yeah, I drew it awfully healthy-looking.
So they must be flanking it. Right, Simbati? <_<'

(Simbati: "...Sure.")
