An updated design of some characters I've been working on! From left to right: Hare, Bear, Robin and Mist. Since I already have some lore on google docs somewhere Ill just copy and paste it down hereThe story is set in a small remote island probably around the coasts of Scotland, where a small population of people used to live- around a few hundred or so. They were fairly developed but pretty sheltered from the mainland at the time. And wouldn't you know it, they almost all had household pets: Domesticated dogs, birds, and most notably, cats.
Then came a virus, which showed the simple symptoms of a cold or flu; so they didn't think much of it when their cats and dogs had the same dry noses, cracked paws, and bloodshot eyes.
Then they started coughing blood, and then they couldn't keep down food.
And then they died, one by one.
The doctors began advising the inhabitants to move out, or donate their pets to a shelter, as they feared the sickness could spread to humans. And their numbers started dwindling.
Eventually, the island became uninhabited, and those with pets simply dumped them in the woods before they left, hoping this sickness wouldn't get to them.
So there they have the remaining 50 or so cats, clueless and scared in the woods, struggling.
Amongst the ruckus, 4 cats stood up, trying to organise the chaos. All four had different ideas on where to go.
Marsh was a grizzled old tom with a squashed muzzle, and he wanted to move to the swampy forest for cover and safety.
Breeze was a young she-cat with sharp eyes and a sharper tongue, and she claimed the fields had plentiful prey for them to eat.
Brook was Breeze's older sister, with long, silky fur and drooping ears. She said the river nearby could give them enough food and water for all of them.
Fern was bright tom with an even brighter white and copper pelt, and a leaf-green harness. He wanted to explore the mainland's forest, where there was cover and a potential gorge where the rumoured previous wildcats lived.
All of the other cats sided with one of these four, and left with their leaders to their new homes. Those disagreeing stayed behind in their old homes, or were left to fight for scraps in the unmarked territories. Many of them died from catching the illness from the husks of dead cats suffering from this horrid disease, slowly starving to death or going insane and passing on in fits, foaming at the mouths.
So then became the Marshlands, Breezelands, Brooklands, and Fernlands. Each main character is from one territory.
And here are some character descriptions:
Let me start with Hare, my most developed of the four. He was born the biological son of Breeze, but he didn't know his father- funny as he was the spitting image of his mother. The same large ears, light brownish fur, and slender physique. He was the only heir, and was given a lot of special treatment, but it made him more anxious and humble that bratty. A little after Hare became an apprentice age, his mother showed him something- something she said he was "old enough" to see, deep in the rock formation in the centre of the island. (Let's say it may or may not be a moonstone-like crystal, and a sacrifice) He isn't very mentally stable and has a lot of pressure on him.
Then we have the kit, his name is Bear after his shaggy deep brown pelt and small curled ears. He is cocky and a very feisty kit for his age (around 4 or 5 moons.) One of his earliest remembered antics was when he was climbing the rocks at the edge of the marshland territory and was caught by a buzzard, luckily slipping from its grip but still injuring his forelegs and some of his flank (you can see the small scars on the drawing.) He was scolded but not punished.
There is Robin, after his long, copper fur and white markings, which is an unusual name as he comes from the Brooklands. He is almost always swimming or soaking wet, and loves to swim more than walk on dry land. He is very sweet and an absolute people pleaser, always going out of his way to help other cats. He is fairly uninterested in politics and just wants to live peacefully. He later met Hare, after the desperate young cat found him as he was investigating the many murders that started happening around Breeze. They became good (if not a bit reluctant) friends and met up many times afterwards.
Then there is Mist of the Fernlands, a large she-cat and the oldest of the four. She has solid blue-grey fur with a splotched white on her face and chest, like a settling mist. She is seen as beautiful by many toms in the Fernland and constantly has at least 3 toms fawning over her at once. She has a lot of friends because of this- but she is quite insecure and just wants to be alone most of the time. She is popular but doesn't want her status
She is also investigating the murders happening, but she hasn't met any of the others yet.
Whelp that's all, I just need a place to put this info really
Feel free to ask questions ig and I'll answer them
