Frankly, if I had Force powers, this is probably exactly how I'd end up using them.

Any character with power, luck, and skill beyond anything an average person would have, with virtually no experience, training, or explanation is a classic Mary Sue.

Lotta drama here. lol
That said, I like the sequels; the fact that they're willing to do something different (TFA excluded, you weird ANH clone) is enough for me.

Rey is just weakly written. Ironically the one believable thing right now (before Episode 9) is that she isn't related to any of the three Bloodlines that are Force Users (Skywalker, Kenobi, Palpatine). Though female characters who is weakly written or inconsistently written isn't hard to find in Star Wars given that the only well written and consistently well written female character in the series was Mara Jade in the Thrawn Trilogy. (Who was written as a direct criticism to the lacking written females in the Original Trilogy in 1991-1993)
Carol Danvers is DEFINITELY a Mary Sue though. Not only was she given "Jar Jar is the key to all of this status" at the end of Infinity War, but they also made her into a powerhouse so destructive that she could take on Thanos WITH the Infinity Gauntlet. Not to mention the lack of personality, character growth and motivation other than "The Plot needs her here". In the end, she was pointless in Endgame and could be cut from the story with her role being given to other characters which would fit betterΒ (Rocket Racoon,Β
What makes Carol MUCH more problematic is how unlike Star Wars which has this consistent problem of lackluster female characters, the MCU does not with Gamora, Nebula, Hela (decent enough) and Valkyrie.

Eh, I have no quarrel with her being unrelated to major characters. There was a character named Dorsk-81, who was the eighty-first generational clone of his lineage. Eighty generations of Dorsk were identical in every way, and then he turned out to be Force-sensitive.
It really is a shame that Disney decided to crap all over Star Wars cannon, because they could have adapted movies full of well-written female characters.Β

I can think of a different way: Rey is just a student of Luke Skywalker and she was trained in his Jedi school. when Ben did his Anakin Jedi temple thing, Luke looks in the rubble finding Rey's unconscious body. Feeling guilty, Luke takes her to Jakku and that's why you see the vision of the ship flying away: It's Luke's piloting that ship. That only emphasizes WHY Luke told Rey to "Go Away" because he didn't want her involved and realized she doesn't remember.
There you go, I got rid of the blood relationships and exchanged it for something of greater value.
Nah, Disney didn't crap all over Star Wars canon. George Lucas did with the Star Wars prequels. If you think I'm making that up, go look up Thrawn Trilogy and realize what we COULD have gotten if George wasn't so prideful of his own vision and pissy about Mara Jade.
To me, it's all about
1. Can you entertain me?
2. If so, how can you entertain me?
3. does this look visually like it won't age poorly in 10 years?

Analog-AI In reply to DebuLover [2019-11-29 21:40:24 +0000 UTC]
So, it's better if Luke randomly decided to transplant a student and abandon her into homelessness because he was feeling bad about another student falling to the Dark side? I don't see how that's better than the turd sandwich of a story they already presented.Β
And, yes, George Lucan gave no shits about established cannon when he made the prequels, but he didn't officially declare that all established cannon was invalidated so he could make his movies, like Disney did. Your precious Thrawn trilogy is no longer cannon, and neither is Mara Jade, because Disney didn't want to make JJ Abrams collaborate with the man employed by Lucas Arts to maintain cannonicity in Star Wars.Β Also, the unspoken rule of Star Wars, before he sold it to Disney, was that anything George Lucas says is automatically cannon. So, he didn't need to be pissy about anything. He simply didn't care because he would always be unchallenged.

Because it's not making another shit take of "LOOK AT THIS BLOODLINE CONNECTION!!!! LOOK AT HOW THIS CHARACTER IS RELATED TO ONE OF THREE BLOODLINES!!!!" If you think bloodlines are what matters, you are part of the problem and why people like Seth Green actively make jokes about you and people like you 1 month after TLJ came out:
The full joke is between 1:18 to 1:45
www.youtube.com/watch?time_conβ¦
And the average Robot Chicken Episode takes about 6 months to animate, so how long do you think Seth Green had that joke brewing up from the fanbase?
Yet George Lucas could EASILY have made the Thrawn trilogy into the next set of movies instead of the prequels. What was stopping him outside of his own pride? They were not only written up before the prequels were conceived, but also brought Star Wars back from the Dark Ages. Zahn understood how to make a natural storyline from the OT where Lucas was too prideful to admit Zahn had done a good job. And even to this day still did a better job than Lucas did when compared to the prequels storyline. George already fucked up the canon by breaking the core thanks to episode 1 and 2.
No matter how you look at it, Star Wars was already ruined in May of 1999.

Slow your roll, bro. I don't give a shit about blood relations with regards to Force-users. My issues with Rey are not regarding her lineage. In fact, I'm more upset with how Abrams has fucked around with Han, Leia, and Anakin's lives between Episode 6 and 7. And, let's face it, the Thrawn trilogy was unnecessarily obtuse and too much of a departure from the pacing and style of the original trilogy to have been pleasing to a wide audience.Β
I thought that I was an obsessive Star Wars fan, but I apparently have nothing on you.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
DebuLover In reply to Analog-AI [2019-11-29 22:56:44 +0000 UTC]
All I'm pointing out that the bloodline nonsense is exactly how we got in this situation. Also, I doubt that the Thrawn Trilogy would be a departure given how it is credited for SAVING STAR WARS. Can't do that if it was as you describe it.
There is a difference between what you think is obsessive and what is research. I researched all of this before the TFA even hit theaters. Back when it was first announced that the 7th movie was going to be made, they also were talking about how they were going to wipe away the old EU. So I decided to look into it and compare what happened before to what happened now.

Dude, doing research on this stuff is what classifies you as, "obsessive". And how did a book series, "save", Star Wars? I own and have read them a few times, but I would not say they are in keeping with the spaghetti-western tone of the original trilogy. In fact, I'd only give it credit for the creation of Mara Jade, Admiral Daala, and giving an opening for the X-Wing series and The Bacta War. Credit where credit's due, but the Thrawn trilogy doesn't have as much individual clout as you're trying to give it.Β

Besides, you do understand that all of this, this conversation, that article you linked, is simply personal opinion? Doing research on Star Wars to try to prove yourself, "right", about your opinions, does make you obsessive. Opinions are opinions. That article started off by stating the opinion that, "Star Wars was dead in 1991," even though it was published online 21 years later and they were talking about it.Β And here's another opinion: Aaron Allston is a far better author with more memorable contributions to Star Wars lore than Zahn ever has. And that's not even mentioning Michael Stackpole or Troy Denning.Β

I'm not the one praising the hacks who gave you Fate of the Jedi. A series which is known for butt fucking the entire Galaxy so hard that is brought in a planet full of Sith Lords out of nowhere, a Force Monster equivalent of Kaguya Ootosuki and made the final villain of the Shitty sequel series a Sand Person Sith Lord.
You got to REALLY fuck up hard to come up with something that retarded.
You can keep your garbage writers. Zahn is still a better writer in his pinky finger than those three hacks combined.

Eh, It'll almost certainly suck in some ways, but I'll probably still end up going to see it in theaters and then buying some version of it later. The Force Awakens had me so furious after watching it in theaters that my wife insisted on driving home because she thought I was unfit to drive. True story.
But, I still came back for The Last Jedi. And, I it didn't leave me intoxicated with rage, so I guess it was either better than the last, or my expectations were lowered too far to be disappointed by anything.Β
