Description

Pearl entered the cave and found Midnight nursing from Aspen, who in turn, watched her with loving and caring eyes. Pearl was a little confused, but she figured it would be better if she kept her mouth shut. She had only just met these two mares. They didn't seem like the type to get angry easily, but she didn’t want to risk anything.

Aspen and Midnight were standing towards the back of the cave, which was surprisingly deep for such a small cave. Pearl decided to stand towards the front of the cave, watching the snow fall harder and harder as the storm rolled in. After a few minutes, Aria took a place right next to Pearl.

”It’s really coming down out there, huh?”

Pearl smiled and agreed, stealing a few glances at midnight who, although she seemed to be getting full, was still nursing. She hadn’t realized just how tiny she had been getting and now she felt a pang of guilt in her stomach.

”She’ll be okay..” Pearls ears perked up at Aria’s soft voice. “You got here just in time.”

Pearl was silent, letting her thoughts race in her mind. Her worries about Midnight. Her need to find a herd.

Aria spoke up once again. “Everything’s okay now. You’re not alone. You have Aspen and I.”

Pearl didn’t speak for a moment, then she dared asked the question.

”May I ask... How..?” The words seemed to disappear and Pearl struggled to put her thoughts together, but she was looking back at Aspen and Midnight, who had finally finished nursing and she curled up beside Aspen to finally get some rest.

”How Midnight was able to nurse..?” Aria finished Pearl’s sentence. Pearl nodded slightly. Quickly adding that she didn’t have to explain.

”Its okay. Aspen won’t mind. She’d probably want to tell you herself, but she’s a little busy atm..” Aspen had curled up right next to Midnight, still not taking her eyes off of Midnight. Pearl noticed the kindness and caring in her eyes, but could also see sadness in them.

Aria went on to tell Aspen’s story. Aspen had been in a herd not too long ago, before she met Aria. Aspen had become pregnant and had been so excited. As was her whole herd as it had been a while since a foal had been welcomed to the herd. As the days went on, the excitement grew, along with her belly. The day came and it was time to deliver. Complications arose and it turned out, Aspen had been pregnant with twins. After a long delivery, one foal came out stillborn. The other was alive, but extremely weak. The foal was loved by the whole herd but after only a week, a mountain lion chased and killed her foal. After losing both her foals and all the condolences from her herd members becoming too much, she left silently in the middle of the night. She had become extremely saddened over the loss of her baby’s and wandered aimlessly. Aria and Okunnugur then came across Aspen after a few days of her wondering on her own. Although Aspen had wished to be alone, Aria wouldn’t let that happen and they soon became quick friends. Pearl then met them just a few days after that.

Pearl felt her heart break a little for Aspen. The pain of going through such a tough birth, then losing both in a matter of days would be heart breaking for any mare.

”I’ve been doing my best to help her through it but theres only so much I can do. She seems to be doing better but I can’t help but worry for her..”

”Well,” Pearl replied. “I’m sure having Midnight will help in some way. Maybe the fact that her foals deaths won’t be in vain..”

”Pearl..?” She turned around and saw Midnight yawning, still curled up with Aspen. She walked up to her

”I’m here. Don’t worry. Aspen will take great care of you..” Pearl smiled.

“You won’t leave me, will you?” The small filly spoke up once more. Pearl hesitated. She looked into the bright, innocent eyes of the foal. She then sighed, defeated.

“Of course not. I’m right here.” She then laid down right next to Aspen and Midnight. “I promise.”

Midnight smiled and then curled back up and fell asleep. The three mares watched the filly for a while before Aspen spoke up.

”Thank you..” She whispered.

Pearl smiled. “You too..”

Soon, night washed over the land and all three mares fell asleep. For now, they’d worry about the present. Not the future. And although it wasn’t what Pearl thought and it was small, maybe Pearl had found her herd. Just Maybe...
