Description
The reference for my Rutulan alphabet. Rutulan is only a working title. This is actually more of a substitution than a truly novel script, but it's for Latin which has the advantage of already being written more or less phonetically.
This script is special to me, so I'm asking that you don't use it without my prior authorization. There are other alphabets I have invented which are free to use. Ask me about those.
Some orthographic notes:
Length is meaningful in Latin, and it applies to both vowels and consonants. There actually are instances of Latin writing where the length of the vowel is indicated, but it never caught on. The length of a consonant--also called "gemination"--is marked by doubling the letter for the affected sound. In both cases, I have used the macron to indicate length. With some letters that have an ascender (where a full macron would be inconvenient) a dot may be used instead.
Not shown here is a means of showing that a vowel in poetry has been elided. At the end of the elided word, a colon is used. You can see examples here: fav.me/d8zl4hs
Also not shown: K is always used before the vowel A, and Q is always used before O and U. Everywhere else, use C.
ps or bs will each be spelled with the character ps, so urbs=urps and is only three letters long.
Y, DZ/ZD, Ph, Kh, and Th are foreign phonemes, and so the letters standing for them are mostly found in loanwords. You will still see things like "pulcher" but there's not too many of those.
THERE IS NO LETTER V AND NO LETTER J. There are no upper and lower case, although I may upload a capital script for use in inscriptions.
