Description
A new installment in my ongoing series updating the technology of the classic sic-fi series UFO produced by the late Gerry Anderson. The show was about a secret organization called the Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization (SHADO). Using state of the art weapons SHADO protected the planet against evil aliens who were out to destroy the human race. But the weapons were sate of the art in the seventies so being the geek that I am, I just had to modernize it.On the series you saw three versions of the Mobiles: a radar equipped command and control configuration, a fire-support configuration armed with what looked like either an auto-cannon or heavy machine gun along with a large caliber mortar, and what was presumably an armored personnel carrier (APC) configuration. The funny thing was that you never saw anyone come out of that huge rear compartment. This was likely because of the use of models in the stop-motion animation used for the special effects in the seventies and the shows generally low budget. But I thought it was odd that you saw three men crowded into the crew compartment. So my redesign made the vehicle into a true personnel carrier capable of deploying six infantry troops as part of a team tasked with recovering crashed UFOs and dealing with their pilots. Just for fun I also designed the equipment for the SHADO infantry troops including a personal flight system (IE a jet pack.)
There would also have to be a specialized version for transporting living alien prisoners that the recovery team captures. However, since that vehicle would be externally identical to the APC except for some markings so I didn’t bother to draw it.

I did play the the original X-Com, but I always thought that game was inspired by the UFO TV show.
Thanks for the look.

That is cirrent, UFO inspired the orginal X-Com game, right down to the organ stealing aliens. Howver, X-Com Apocalypse, ala X-com III has this blue armor called the Disruptor Armor as well as flying armor, thats why I made that comment. Maybe I am mistaken and you based your armor design on something else but it looks oddly familar to me.

I stopped at the first X-Com. The armor was an original design. But I may have been unconsciously influenced by the 40+ years of avid sci-fi consumption. Thanks again.

You should give the other X-Com games a try, Terror From the Deep you have to play through to know what a "Hard game" is like and Apocalypse is just awesome.

The armor is what happened when Cobra Commander and Boba Fett got drunk one night...
Cobra Commander mistook Fett for the Baroness... Fett mistook Cobra Commander for a Twi'lek girl, one thing led to another...
Naturally they promised to forget the night ever happened, but one day, years later, Cobra Commander knocked on Slave 1's hatch, Fett answered and saw Cobra Commander and a short, armored figure standing there.
"It's YOURS!" Cobra Commander screeched.
Boba Fett had never screamed before in his life...

Wouldn't go that far, but I've seen recently and I have a lot of good things to say... Recently on YouTube I created a playlist of Gerry Anderson themes and began favoriting the various ones (I think I just sat there at work listening to them for hours recently). The man made great shows, themes included. I need to start watching UFO. I never gave the show a real chance. Gerry Anderson was a sci-fi guy... We need more of these.

I think my squalk is that the USA has been yapping about UFOs for decades and the evidence has yet to surface. Don't get me wrong, I want to believe.

A better update would be a camouflage paintjob so it's no longer a shiny target.
Still, nice work.

I thought about that but, to be honest, I was to lazy to figure out how to do a cammo pattern in photoshop.

My next redesign will be SHADO small arms. Remember the shiny silver guns they used. They looked like a toy they bought a fave and dime.
Besides the truck being shinny the had the name of the "secret" organization plastered on the sides of the vehicles.
But I wanted maintain the overall feel of the show while modernizing it a bit.

Agreed.
I've gort a resin prop replica of the SHADO-issue pistol, that was pretty cool but yes, an update might be good.
Bear in mond the aliens used the chrome guns, so maybe they didn't know any better.

I just took a look at the rifles used by the Mobile crew in the "Flight Path" episode. They aren't as shinny as the alien's weapon, but they aren't exactly low visibility either. And I can't see a magazine anywhere. I'm betting the working props used strip caps.
