Description
This is based on a drawing I did some time ago. This my first painting in two years and I wanted to get my feet wet with a subject I know well.Although this is a painting, I put in the drawings category because there is no category for comic in the fan art section for paintings.
Oils on illustration board 8.5X11

STORM!!
I heart X-Men...though to be truthful it's a love I've come only to discover this year (god bless my geeky friends.) After watching the old animated show and reading a bunch of old comics, I've come to appreciate the movies and the new comics in a way I would have never dreamed.
Heartfelt ramblings aside, this is a pretty cool painting. My only suggestion is to work on painting lightning. I myself can't claim any skill beyond graphite, pastel, and digital art really--but one thing I can say is that lightning is THIN, lightning is CHAOTIC. That stripe of light behind Storm is much too thick and straight to claim any sort of bond with thunder. Take pictures of lightning and try and mimic what you see. Art imitates life. (which is why I say realism is the best way to go if you want to improve your skills as an artist)
Wow, this was a long comment. Anyways, great stuff, and X-Men RULES.

I like the pose. I've found that its harder to get flat color with oils. With blending, i prefer oils but for flat comic color, I like acrylic paints better. Plus they dry fast and you can ink overtop. It depends on your style and what works better for you. Good piece. You need to just keep practicing and doing more paintings and things will get easier.

Ooh...pretty cool. I love the outfit. The background could be a bit more dynamic, but otherwise, its pretty awesome.

I think the figure looks fantastic, but I'm not so sure about the background. There's a lot of empty space, where you could have added a little variation in her cape, or in the grey background. Also, I think the position of the lightning bolt could have been different.
Storm, herself, though, looks amazing! Keep up the good work there! Just don't neglect the background once you get your main subjects down.

Yes, Storm it's on of the best character IMO... Oils have their complications but you did a good job on her, nice piece.

To be honest, it's a bit plain... I get that you're going for the Storm + stormy sky but there's a lot of grey. If the sky had a variation of grey (like bluey-grey and greeny-grey) instead of monotone, it would separate itself from Storm's grey clothes. Also, a better line-work would've been to have the lightning parallel to her body. Her body's great though, it just looking for a better background choice.
Hope I'm making sense!

Storm was always my favourite. I think you painted the intensity of her powers very well. I like the stark darkness of her cape

Thanks. This was a digital photo of the original, when it dries, I'm going to scan it and replace the photo. I'm hoping the colors come out better then. The photo look s pretty good, but modesty aside, the photo didn't get the intensity of tho colors. For instance the cape shadows had a blue tint in the black to reflect a little of the blue in the lightening bolt, but that really didn't come out in the photo. Hopefully it will when I scan it.
Thanks again!
