Description
DeviantART really should reorganized its submission categories. I hate having to pick either "digital" or "traditional", what if it was done with both? Sigh. This is an editorial assignment for an article pertaining to the left-handed public (of which I happen to be a part of).
This was done with ink and photoshop. Getting better and better at mixing the two

Athough I'm not left-handed, I've always prided myself on relating to others. Something like being left-handed might seem insignificant to righties, but there really are a lot of things that we take for granted. My favorite anecdote in regards to this is the fact that the word "dexterous" used to be used an alternative for right-handed, while "sinister" was an alternative for left-handed. Left-handed people were "touched by the devil" or represented some other kind of evil in some cultures. I don't know if that was on your mind with the black, writhing tendril around the arm, but it certainly struck that chord for me. The hand seems to be burdened and struggling against that, but I believe the tendril represents more the hardships left-handed people have dealt with.

I have noticed some of the great artists were left-handed, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rubens, Albrecht Durer & my personal favorite, my mom

I have a deviation that is both digital and traditional too, I drew the clouds in pencil. It's called "Sindred Digital" even though the clouds are in pencil.

This is well done and striking. The left handed people don't get enough credit for dealing with all the righties...XD
thanks for sharing this. It's lovely.

Love love love love! Those lines in the palm are really great.
Even as a boring old righty, the handedness thing has always fascinated me. The stigma (sinistra~sinister, forcing children to write with their right hand), the connection to brain activity and certain talents, etc. Lots of interesting people have been left-handed! I was surprised to learn recently that with the exception of Jimmy Carter and Dubya, all of our presidents since 1974 have been left-handed.

yes! I've always thought of it as an interesting topic, both the history and the science What intrigues me is that there has always been a constant percent of left handed people on earth, its always been at 9-10%, even during the stone age (apparently in cave paintings, 9% of the people depicted were left handed.)
So strange!

I read some theory once about left-handed people in the olden days being more vulnerable during battle because they held their shields on the right side and left their heart more exposed. I don't know if there's anything to that, but it's fun to think about.
I'm fascinated by ambidextrousness, too. I have this weird phobia about my dominant hand getting bitten off, or something, and not being able to draw, so I spend a lot of time practicing with my non-dominant hand, ahahah.

I think there is a mixed media category, but I could be wrong.
I really like the concept behind this and the texture. The detail on the hand is excellent!

Did you draw the hand and the black swirl separately and then put them together in photoshop? I tend to do that a lot now in order to make it easier to play with the different elements. Just curious about your process and I love this piece!
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Andoledius In reply to Artboycat [2011-03-25 06:02:55 +0000 UTC]
yup! The vines were done in ink, so i scanned them in and layed them over the hands. I also painted some custom ink textures for the hands themselves and scanned those in, so the picture would blend better.
thanks for your comment!

It so strange how in olden times, and when I say olden, I realized not so long ago, people thought if you were left handed that was a sign of the devil.... so weird...
This looks so amazing, all the line work is so fluid it almost looks like it is moving

I know more than a few of us are bothered that there is no category for a mix of traditional and digital. It's very common to mix the two. Anyway beautiful work as always! I think lefties are awesome, all the best artists I know are lefties (including YOU XD)!
