Description
An Β exercise for recognizing values, light and shadow. Using mainly airbrush. I prefered to use tracing in order to enjoy the process, while practicing the use of values. This is the original photo . I am very open to get advices about how I can improve
Trying to express the suffering of so many innocents around the world...

They are actually defined, in a layer underneeth - if you look closer you can guess some texture. It is just that I am not yet able to make it good enough, and it looks better like this. Having them too raw takes away fromher feminity. I still need to practice that area...

I did not know about the nameΒ Chiaroscuro, even though I did play a bit with shadow and light on basic objects. I found some videos:Β
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uwR14β¦
www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a0m9Dβ¦
Is this what you mean?
With the hair I have serious problems, and last time I asked for advice I got feedback that it looks like a peruca - I tend to make too many lines and it gets too much volume. I see that now I went on the other extreme I'll have to practice more on that, thank you for the tips!
As to the shoulder area - there are two strong sources of light: left and right - I thought of having a slight blur shining efect and not have a perfect cut of the shape, to give it a bit of a dreamy feeling.
Regarding the mouth I was wondering if it is better with less definition - since the focus is on her sadnes, where the expression of the mouth should play a role, but the eyes and the tear sould attract the attention. Also, at my level of skill, if I try to apply more contrast on the borders of the mouth, I loose some sweetness and softens in the expression. Thank for highlighting this - I will try to finda way to have both.
I will work on the details you suggested and I send you a version, if you like - I am curious if I manage to do it as you imagine it. (With the hair I am not sure I can do it much better at this point I need to learn more and to practice
)Β

Yes! Chiaroscuro is exactly that and with the shoulder, that effect was honestly beautiful i just wanted to make sure you knew that in scales, definition is a must!
I am still a student learning so I thought i'd give you tips on what i've learned in realism which is my strong point (but not my focus ^^")
If you need help, i'm always available to critiqueΒ

Thank you
I was very sad while working on this piece - sad that there was a conflict in the first place, and sad that usually the innocent people have to suffer, on all sides...Β
