Description

Whilst the Citadel class was designed for carrier escort missions in brown water environments, practical experience showed it was too small too commit to all of its duties (anti-ship operation, medium area air defence, anti-submarine warfare, support in coast guard and marine operations) in extended missions. The Citadel class vessels were refitted to a more dedicated brown-water anti-surface role and their sensor arrays were kept in storage before being fitted upon a newly constructed class of escort frigates. Moreover though, this escort frigate was planned to take on additional roles during low-intensity conflicts (humanitarian support/anti-piracy/amphibious landings and logistics support) using exchangeable mission packages. The result was the Spire class of multi-mission frigate.

By default the Spire class frigates are equipped with:
-Oto Melera 127mm naval gun
-57mm autocannon CIWS, combined with short-range anti-missile missile launcher in a turret (equivalent to RAM's, pretty much);
-Reduced depth vertical launch missile tubes either side of the front deck, equipped with:
--Amaros PD-R personal defense missiles
--Decoys
--Kinetic countermeasures
-2 15.5mm HMG's in remote weapon stations, with independent sensors and optionally equippable with LRAD's
-Integrated sensor mast including, amongst other things, EO/IR sensors, tracking radars, multi-spectral electronic countermeasures, medium-range search radar, short-band anti-submarine radar, signalling lights, and a long-range optical sensor
-"Flex deck", seen here with a combination of VLS-cells and RHIB davits
-Helicopter landing pad & hangar with space for 1 helicopter + UAV
-360-degree HARK-launcher (hardkill countermeasure launcher)

-Acoustic countermeasure dispensers

-Full-spectrum chaff & smoke launchers

Shown here is the Spire class with the standard combat module + brown water land attack supplement equipped, which adds
-1 RHIB
-full-length VLS launchers midships and aft of the flight deck; this example layout is equipped with a combination of anti-surface and fleet escort missiles, namely:
--Sea Eagle 1A anti-ship missile
--Sea Eagle 1B anti-surface missile
--Sea Eagle 1C anti-submarine missile
--LRSM-C Long Range Strike missiles
--GMLRS land attack missiles
--Armaros L air defense missiles
--Amaros M air defense missiles
--Additional Amaros PD-R air defense missiles
--Additional decoys
--Additional kinetic countermeasures
-4 torpedo tubes
-Towed sonar array
-Expanded combat mission centre

Other mission packages can add a combination of a vehicle ramp, a catapult and net arrestor for fixed-wing UAV's, demining equipment, a dock for 4 patrol & interception vessels, onboard hospital, a dock for 2 light and 2 medium landing craft, up to 4 RHIB's, and a crane, as well as additional stores and quarters to support this equipment. These tasks are always led by more specialized vessels in the Dystic fleet, but the Spire class ships can temporarily provide additional capability where needed.

A follow-up to www.deviantart.com/andorianus/… . I decided to indeed go that extra mile and make this thing longer; and to justify it I made it a multimission vessel too. Destroyers of this size are expensive, so a justification of what a ship like this does in peacetime is in order; as is a justification as to why I should draw it again. Decided not to do the camo thing this time around though.

And yes, it's a destroyer, but in the Dystic navy they call them frigates.

Lots of folks seemed to like my old drawing, so enjoy some more.

Weapons and systems provided by Blackbuck. MConrads is quoted because there is something in the overall shape that is borrowed from their Visby Class drawing.
