Description When my ThePortfolio teacher saw my Lark painting, she wanted to know how this character lived and what her life is like. Although I just thought Lark lived in a nest with no other birds just like a regular bluejay, I thought I would be fun to do something more fantastical, even though I may not use it in the story. This place is full of conifers, not deciduous trees, because that's where bluejays are usually found. And I had SO many forest scenes already that I wanted to put at least a few human elements, so that's where the idea of the fountain came from. I also thought it would be fitting if they lived like the ancient Greeks- that's their style, to me.

Corel Painter 8.0. I ordered the 9th version for my PC laptop, but that's the LAST time I order a CD online, because my computer cannot read the disk! And I'd BETTER figure out what's happened to the drive, because it's DAMN EXPENSIVE!

Friggin beautiful, Andrew! You're such a master of painter now, eh. Maybe you should do some concept art for "Benjamins." Anyway.. yah. Beautiful.

Man, all of these Portfolio pieces of yours are absolutely gorgeous! And everything is so vibrant and shiny. A fitting place for bluejays indeed I love the painty style and the life and character that you seem to have such a knack for putting into your work.

The title made me giggle. "Agora" is the name of Kidd's (my chicky character) home town. It's really neat because agora means marketplace and I see so much bustle and life in this piece. Lark belongs in a beautiful home surrounded by others who love her.

This is so beautiful. It's got that fantastical feel to it but it's believable all at the same time. I want that fountain in my front yard. Gorgeous, gorgeous pic, Andrew!

why don't you try blurring the foreground to create a focal point at the fountain?

On a semi-related note, I saw the first BLUEJAY of the SEASON here, and I thought about Lark. For reals. Now I'll never be able to see a bluejay without thinking of YOU. Thanks a lot, man

Zimed [2005-05-02 00:01:42 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's really awsome....although, I see you use Corel Painter, what brushes, do you use? It doesn't look like you use the airbrush tool (I hate that tool)? And yet, at the same time, the paintings almost look like a real painting, smooth and such.

You know, I don't think I'll ever be able to do digital painting. Because I can not paint without black line art or any other colour lines. As a guide. And, of course with guidelines or line art, it doesn't really look like a painting, but rather a cartoon, or something.

Could you give me some good tips, on what I could to to ease this problem.

-Thanks

andrewk In reply to Zimed [2005-05-02 00:09:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, of COURSE you could still use black lines as a guide in Corel! You can scan them in, and open them in Painter and paint over them. What I did here is block in the overall shapes and shading, added color overlaying it, and worked on the details, but I still have to work with black lines too.

Also, what brushes do you use in Corel Painter?

For this piece, I used the Conte brush and the Blender brush, just the Detail one.

oh AWESOME!!!
i like how it has that misty feeling... like someone else mentioned, it creates this fantasy, surreal feeling.

I should tell you my bluejay story I realised I never told you this, and you're a huge jay fan it seems

There's this huge tree outside my dad's pizza store where a pair of bluejays made their nest
my dad went out one day and found that one of the babies had fallen out of the nest and was stunned under the tree... so despite the mom and dad attempting to peck him to death, he scooped it up, put it in box and brought him home

he had broken his little wing from the fall, and was stunned
we kept him for two weeks
my mom actually fed him slightly browned hamburger from her mouth since he wouldn't take it from an eye dropper.
We helped him fly by holding him in our hands up high, and gentlly pushing him off
I cried so hard the day he finally learned, and he puffed himself up and started cheeping like crazy, he was so proud of himself.
The day we brought him back was probably the hardest day of my life
I was only a kid when we had him, he slept in my stuffed animal hamper, cuddled up with my beanie babies (which got covered in poo)
it was like something out of a movie. Dad climbed the tree to put him back in the nest with his parents, and he started flapping his wings like crazy and cheeping and singing, his parents were doing it too. Then he puffed himself up and started flying around, like a "look maw, look what i can do!"
I was worried that the parents wouldn't accept him back since he stunk like people now. But they did. He was old enough now that he would have probably left the nest a few days after us dropping him off anyways... so if they did boot him out, he'd do fine on his own (i hope)

anyways, that's the story of jayjay, my little blue jay

*sniff* WAAA-haaa-haaa-haaaaaaaa!

Maybe i should incorporate a story like that if I ever introduce a bluejay child!

alexneonakis In reply to andrewk [2005-05-02 14:29:59 +0000 UTC]

it had a happy ending though, we brought him back
it would have been terrible if we kept him
It felt good to know that because of us, that bird got a second chance
