They all turned out very nicely. I particularly like the ocean one.

you're welcome. I put a little brown wolf pup lying on the ground and put more rays so that they went over the pup. It looks adorable.

ah thank you!
i'm not an expert (probably not even an amateur) but.. what kind of stuff do you want to know?
generally I think just try all sorts of things, be adventurous - different lighting, different scenes, different techniques and you'll naturally learn over time through experimentation
look at photos, observe everything around you and how colours/light interact (ie. colour theory) and also see how other people use it successfully
eg. for shadows, never simple use a darker shade of the same hue - make them warmer or cooler, same with highlights
I feel really dumb listing this stuff haha and I don't know how much you know (sorry if this is really basic) - I probably shouldn't be giving advice at all!

That is good advice, you should give advice because you are really good! Thank you, I want to know how to get good sky affects and water affects - and how to draw a sun because I keep on doing a large yellow ball with streaks of light coming out of it XD
What would you recommend the best art programme for doing backgrounds?

asdf I'm still learning, these were a big challenge for me!
my skies are kinda lacking (see bottom-left ffff) but hm.. generally skies get lighter towards the horizon because of the atmosphere or something (scientific knowledge, i do not have it)
water is just a pain in general oh man even seasoned artists need references for that stuff! all i can think of (i'm kinda multitasking sorry, i've got a major exam tomorrow morn h-haha) is that water isn't always blue - it'll change according to the lighting, the amount of water, even the broader environment/weather/time of the year (in warmer months there'll be algae in certain bodies of water, for example - it'll turn slightly green)
observe how water flows in different confines... er again for both things, look at photos and observe everything: you could even try to copy some photos (just give credit if you post it anywhere of course) and you'll learn through that. the more you look at and play around, the more naturally this sorta stuff comes i find!
for suns i generally paint in a smooth-edged ball that gets brighter in the middle fff like this: [link] or [link] don't worry about yellow balls with streaks of light though haha everyone starts off like that! and art is always a learning progress~
as for art programs, any can make decent art but i'm the most accustomed to photoshop. i've dabbled in Corel Painter and stuff but i'm too stubborn to learn it.. PaintTool SAI is also pretty neat! the only free program I can think of at the moment is GIMP but I haven't used that in years h-haha i only really know how to use Photoshop - just try not to solely use default brushes because they tend to look a bit stiff (and obvious)
THIS IS SO LONG sorry! i hope it's helpful

Aw, I'm sure you'll be able to!
I actually don't know what I'm doing most of the time, so I don't think it's 'learning' in my case c:

It would be awesome (not to mention helpful lol) for you to one day just screencast urself while you are doing one of them. So that even though you don't know what exactly it is your doing....I would!! And i would just follow along lol. It is just a matter of the coloring techniques that I have issues with.

Oh haha, that's a pretty good idea! I get really nervous when people watch me work and I don't think I'm going to be doing another background like this in a while though. Maybe I'll record the screen while I work and put it up later so it's not live? (when I'm doing some other background)
I don't know if I'll remember, but I'll try!

I'm amazed! I think the undersea one is my favourite, wow. I wouldn't have the patience to put in all that fine detailing. The spooky house is awesome too. Good on you also for working on your skill with backgrounds, it's something I see a lot of people neglecting and I think it's really important - heck, it's not really my strong point but it's through working on such things that I've come to enjoy and appreciate them more. Your work will be all the richer for it!

I did nearly lose it with the underwater one, I admit - all the coral was enough to make me crazy! :P
*nods* I agree with that, sometimes I find myself looking at parts of artwork and admittedly feel like it's not a big deal, but when I try it myself it's just.. whoa, completely out of my depth and I do appreciate it so much more. I definitely admire those who can create such lovely backgrounds!
Thanks so much.

Ahhh I can't remember if I commented on LJ or not (I've been having internet issues so I've lost track of everything haha) But I LOVE these so much. ;A; They're so incredibly detailed and colourful! I love the reef one especially, it's gorgeous. <3
