Incredible. Would flip if this was the visual style of a new series.

Neat design! That reminds me I do need to finish up on those shows--I've only seen the first movie and the first few episodes of Stand Alone Complex.

That makes me wonder--what do you think of the choice to cast Scarlet Johanson in the role for the movie?

Thanks! Stand Alone Complex is SO good! GiTS is my all time favorite anime franchise.

That being said (and also being a 100% real Asian person), I think the Scarlet Johanson casting is the best thing the movie has going for it right now. The whitewashing in Hollywood deal is bigger than this single movie and I'd like to think I'm a bit more informed on how the industry works which leads me to not have as an aggressive reaction to it (whether or not that's a good or bad thing is another story). But just based on her acting capabilities, I think she fits although the photo that was released isn't really doing it for me.

I actually read today that the original publishers of the manga in Japan are super happy with the casting. Japan loves her and expected a Caucasian actress. I guess it's a cultural thing like "oh, it's America, that's where white people are from, so of course she's going to be white in their movie" and like we'd probably expect her to definitely be Asian if Japan made a live action movie themselves. I'm kind of partial to that. If a white person was cast in a Japanese live-action movie, that would be the time to really start worrying.

Anyways, the main thing i was saying was Scarlet's the best thing about this movie because I don't like the director, the rest of the cast is unremarkable and I have reservations about the script because based on the synopsis, the depiction of The Laughing Man (antagonist in Stand Alone Complex) sounds all wrong to me. But I have a universal rule to not judge a movie until after I see it and remains innocent until proven guilty. If you want to check it out, I put together a post about what a live action adaption would look like in a perfect world: theandrewkwan.tumblr.com/post/…

I can see that reaction--I find that that the US/western audiences are generally more finicky about matters of race than over in Japan. Of course, the west probably has plenty of reasons to, but that isn't to say that no other place in the world doesn't have that kind of bad history.

I think ScarJo makes sense to put in because she's a big deal right now and would put a lot of butts in seats for the casual audience--but on the other hand, like you showed with that pitch, they could have cast a lesser known Japanese actress, then got a few big names for the supporting roles or the villain and gotten about as many butts in seats too. But yeah, I'll give it a watch--I'm sure that if it's at least done half right, I'll like it, since I won't have as much of an investment in it.

Agreed. Business-wise, it makes sense and if one is more informed with how the industry works than one would know ScarJo was probably a smart choice and you wouldn't be as angry about it.

Though today, you don't see as many movies with a single big name to carry a film, but a strong supporting cast (and even crew) that creates several draws as opposed to the single name. And for me, I don't mind movies deviating from source material as long as they make a good movie in itself!
