Description "Strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine." - Obi-Wan Kenobi

I hope the Japanese is right. Spent a lot of time cross referencing different sources to see if what I had was consistent. The words for Master, Wizard, Apprentice and Demon/ Fallen Angel.

I knew that Star Wars was inspired by samurai films, as well as spaghetti westerns, Flash Gordon, and mythology. Good work!

I actually saw a Samurai Darth Vader Figure quite recently. It looked like something like this actually.Except the Empire crest was MUCH bigger.

魔法使い mahoutsukai
魔術士    majutsushi
魔道士    madoushi
魔術師    majutsushi
など       etc.

They all get a little confusing, and part of that is there being a cultural difference with translations. The katakana for wizard, ウィザード, would more succinct, but it's not as fancy as kanji.

Contextually, I find your choice of deshi, 弟子, fits nicely. If you really want to sink in the relationship, then uchideshi, 内弟子, would *probably* fit the master+apprentice relationship jedi have with their padawans, considering how they pretty much lived together. At this point in their lives though, deshi fits both in their current relationship and as a general read.

For the demon/fallen angel part, both of those words already connote differences in English. You have datenshi, 堕天使, which perfectly fits for fallen angel. Just like the (English name for the) Street Fighter character, one of the many Japanese words for demon being akuma, 悪魔, fits just fine. Again, contextually, datenshi would be the better choice to follow the symbolism of the character itself. Otherwise, you can always use demon, デーモン, although you might have people argue that it says daemon, which gets into splitting hair territory.
--------
I don't want to go into handwriting either since mine is terrible in its own ways, (that is something to work on as well) but you should keep your strokes as close together as possible. It's still legible though.

Here's an example of ma, 魔, in a bigger "font" from Dragonball: vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/d… The bottom stroke shouldn't have quite a bend to it as you have up there. There is also the dangling stroke on the left.

Your 士 should have a significantly shorter bottom, and since it's your last stroke, there should most likely not be a dangling bit from your vertical stroke.

What you have written for tenshi, 天使, seems more like you should loosen your hand a little and give more of a "flick." It just seems very rigid.

*stares at own writing* and this is why I never talk about handwriting. =.=;;
--------
Anyway, onto the work!

I love the imagery! The red setting suns are a nice touch to the background. I think the best part is how you used the color of the sageo (cord on the saya/sheath) to distinguish their colors. It would have been nice to see Darth Vader's tied, but considering the stylistic choice of keeping it short, it works. This is a beautiful piece of work.

Hey! Thanks for this huge thing on the writing (the kind of critique I needed while working on it)! I'm not going to pretend that I knew exactly what I was doing, but I'm just glad I didn't end up writing something completely wrong like 'banana' or something Contextually, I knew how many variations there are for different words so I aimed for ones that struck a balance between context and my weird OCD wanting a pattern of 2 and 3 characters. Akuma was the first one that popped up in my head and then doing deeper research found datenshi. The source had common synonyms and affiliates where it was something like Fallen Angel> Lucifer>Satan>Demon so I thought it was fitting more than some of the others.

You can tell I've actually never written Japanese before (or any sort of calligraphy for that matter)! I DO know how exact and particular one is expected to write in the culture- knowing that I was probably butchering the handwriting technique, thank you for the tips and what to watch out for!

This definitely was both fun and challenging deciding the styles of their design and ultimately I aimed for "the same, but different" mantra. Since Star Wars uses color a lot for differentiating characters that's what I decided to go with. I'm glad and appreciate that you noticed all these details!

Oh, despite how long I've studied (and "studied") the language, I'm still quite noob-ish. Honestly, having seen people write better than me on their first try, I can't tell anyone's skill levels when calligraphy, let alone writing, comes up. It hurts that I'm left-handed (that's not a proper excuse nowadays) *and* don't hold brushes properly the few times I've ever tried in life... Pencils are my friends. You also did show some signs of knowing how to write, such as the left radical on 堕 of datenshi having 3 strokes instead of 2. Even if you looked that up, it's common for people to just breeze through and make a continuous stroke. I really don't have any issues with your handwriting, but I'm not a calligrapher. I just happened to stumble upon your artwork, and I'm glad I did. It's so great.

Haha, when we try it out ourselves we definitely gain a high respect for the people who can do it well! I find it really interesting when someone can analyze certain details of handwriting in general, you just don't really hear that kind of stuff with written English that often, so this is refreshing. Anyways, thank you and I'm glad you're enjoying my work!

Awesome work! I like these kind of mix between Star Wars and Japanese warlords era, it's really amazing and looks perfect since much of Star Wars was inspired on Japanese stuff (as in when George Lucas was inspired by Akira Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai", or Vader's suit resembling a Samurai one).
