that explains it - I took some nice images of a heron this weekend but I was further away than I would have liked (to not have to crop the image a bit) - I only have the 400 - which I had on maximum zoom rather than min focus distance. I take it this a heron - what type?

Yes I Like To Get A Close As I Can Then Shoot Wide Open
If I Can Get The Bird Parallel As The DoF Is Very Small Wide Open
But It Just Gives Silky Backgrounds That Make Your Subject Really PoP.
Yes Its A Young Grey Heron.
