Description
This is the final production art for issue 9 of the comic! I rarely ever ever ever do anything digital short of design work or text, but this time I decided to color the cover in Photoshop on my Wacom tablet. The linework is still done traditionally, ink and brush.Big Macintosh features heavily in this story, and the voice actor had just been joking with me that he hadn't seen Big Mac on a cover yet... so there ya go! I love Applebloom and she helped the gag. Derpy, Screwball, and Pinkie, and blind bag figure Sweet Cream Scoops!
The Run For The Roses sign on the cider house is from issue 1, page 3... I'm a lifelong fan of Dan Fogelberg, so I wanted to tip my hat to him... and the song is about horses, so there ya go.

Better stranger than more dangerous. Don't you think?
Beautiful work. I'm so happy of the great popularity of the comic.

I'm going to add my like because this one has Big Macintosh there, and because I can picture any pony living there saying the exact same thing.
Very whimsical, very well done!

It's so cool that this is traditionally done. There's a certain weight and earthiness about traditional media that digital art, as cool as it can be, just doesn't have.

Always glad to see an appearance of our happy-go-lucky, wall-eyed pegasus. You're so generous to the fandom Andy.
Also, have you already Tweeted this cover image to Peter New?

Well, I read the plot summary for this issue a few minutes ago, and I have to say I was surprised in a good way, because I was expecting this new story arc to deal with a villain of sorts aswell, just like the previous two, but seeing as that doesn't seem to be the case, I must say that this seems like a nice change of pace for now.
Don't get me wrong, the villains are one of the things I enjoy the most in MLP, but I was slightly bothered by the fact that it would seem that in the show, all of the double episodes seem to HAVE TO deal with a villain, while we all know it's not necessary to have a bad guy to have a conflict complex enough that can't be wrapped up in a single episode (or issue). So, I'm kind of hoping that we get more double episodes in the show in future seasons, and by that I mean that they shouldn't just be saved for the season premieres or finales, but that they should take place through the seasons aswell. And I'll be looking forward to any future story arc, it doesn't matter if it has a villain or not, because the comics are really enjoyable so far and they look very promising aswell. I'm just wondering if we'll get original villains for the comics though.
And... I suppose we won't be seeing alicorn Twilight in the comic until season 4 comes around, which would probably be halfway through the fourth story arc, so I'm guessing that, in any case, we will see her as an alicorn starting with the fifth story arc, maybe?
By the way, do you think you'll be uploading the cover you did for the Rarity issue for the micro series? Because that one was just awesome.

It's good to see the comic won't suffer from conflict escalation! It's good to go down to a normal level after two major villain arcs!

It's the third time Sweetcream Scoops appears in the comics. (And the second time that she is close to Big McIntosh)
Is she a favorite of you guys or something?

going digitalfor colors is rather nice for not only the clean look you can achieve, but also the fact that you have the magic of the undo button. I really respect that your stuff comes out as clean looking as it does when you're going all traditional, as after years of doing traditional work myself, it would always come off as being incredibly messy looking.
I'd also like to say right now that when I read the plot (hue) summary for this arc, I got jazzed as all heck; I thought that MAYBE at best we'd see a CMC focused arc with the main run of comics, but surprise, surprise! the doors are blown wide open already by giving Big Mac time in the limelight! more interesting is the fact that the synopsis described these as "Everypony's got a story to tell in this new arc by fan-favorites Katie Cook & Andy Price! The citizens of Ponyville take center stage as..."
Mr. Price, I won't ask you to say specifics, but I simply MUST ask; Will the issue 9-12 arc feature various one-shot stories based on secondary characters, or is this just the epic of Big Mac?

And from the blocking of the scene, whatever Big Mac and AB are boggling at is off-stage...Derpy, Screwball and Pinkie Pie are just part of the "normal everyday Ponyville". o_O

Welcome to the dark side bwahahaha! How did you like coloring digitally vs. traditionally? I've done some stuff with markers here and there lately and I always rage at some point during it.

Rage is... oddly enough... part of the challenge to me. Remind me to tell you the epic rage behind issue 5 cover!
The ENTIRE time I did this I marveled at how fast you are!! I like it for the most part, but I don't know many of the tricks and shortcuts... the major advantage to me is no scanning battles!

i think that we can ageed that if you took an artist like jim lee (and you are starting to get old at it) and made him make the MLP pages you would (or i would anyway) go like "OMFG THIS IS SO AMAZING "

crazydude2344 In reply to Jonas-Lion [2013-05-05 16:58:42 +0000 UTC]
It all depends, really. Andy's style fits MLP so well. Jim Lee... I don't know. The style and the property need to go together. That's important. They have to fit.
