Project: Sea Wasp // May 3, 2010Dr. Fredericks reporting…
We’ve finally done it. After months of deliberation and labor, we have finally created a perfect genetic hybrid. I have decided to code name this operation Project: Sea Wasp, in honor of the box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri), whose unique DNA made all of this possible. With just a touch, the venom secreted by this tiny marine creature is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream; the resulting pain is excruciating and will induce shock and near-instantaneous cardiac arrest. It can kill a grown man within seconds. And so, by splicing this creature’s genetic code with that of a human fetus, we have succeeded in passing many of Chironex fleckeri’s traits on to her. Today, we have made history.

Project: Sea Wasp is developing at an astonishing rate. After only a week, she now resembles a six-year-old girl, and still she continues to grow! Moreover, she is speaking and appears to be highly intelligent. What a beautiful creature she is, perfect in every way! Hour by hour, innumerable doors of opportunity continue to open before me.

Project: Sea Wasp lashed out at one of her handlers today and I regret to report that Dr. Rygard lost his life. I express grief for his family. The need for increased security has become apparent and will be implemented immediately. And yet… when I asked my creation why she’d done such a thing, she merely answered, “Why not?”
I was chilled.

Day by day, my feeling of unease continues to grow. Project: Sea Wasp has become violent and combative, and refuses to perform the assessments set out for her. Today she looked at me over the security camera, as though she knew I was watching her. Her eyes… those fluorescent eyes so reminiscent of the creature that made her… they hold nothing for me but hatred. When I look at her now, I no longer see the bright future I had envisioned for this lab. What I see now is death. In trying to create a miracle, I created a monster.

…containment breached… she is loose. In an instant, my dream has become a nightmare. What have I done?

Thank you so much!
I wanted a venomous creature, but I wanted it to be unique, too... so I picked the little box jellyfish. And I thought it would be fun to write a little story, too, because it explains so many things that a picture can't.
