Description
I've been animating this for the past, like, 2 weeks after updating that Baby Eds tumblr: [link]I storyboarded it back in... September, I think, and decided I'd really like to try animating it myself. I'm actually pretty proud of how this came out! This may be some of my most TV-quality animation.
I have no song in mind. I used to think 'Ask For Nothing' by Lemon Demon would be a great song for Al, but maybe it's not a great theme song... I'd rather trust a professional musician to come up with an original song, and I'm no musician.
I'm also unsure what genre of music I'd want for the show. Disco is my favorite, but I basically just love any kind of "retro music." Scat, doo-wop, jazz... I don't know how well these things could be combined, or how well disco could convey different moods.
I just really love theme songs, and rather than ruin this by trying to learn everything about music, I should probably entrust such thinking to someone whose passion for music equals my passion for animation. TOGETHER, a theme song to be proud of will be made!

This is great! You've certainly mastered smears and flexibility. I'd love to see a show like this on television today, very reminiscent of 90's cartoons... If only we had our own television station RIGHT

Seems like a combination of Ed, Edd, n, Eddy with Rocko's Modern Life. Looks like a good start as any for an intro; is this an idea you're currently working on?

An accurate description of Hoop-a-Joop! Yup, been developing these characters since I was 12 and posting them openly on here since last June.

I'm surprised you didn't have a tune going on in your head when you made this, the little instances where the characters say "Hoop-A-Joop" would imply a medley working around it, well at least to me. Seems like a cartoon that'd have a slightly spastic ska-rock intro given it's energy, but disco could work. It'll all depends on execution.

I put "Hoop-a-Joop" wherever it made sense with what the characters were doing, and with theme songs in mind that just kinda say the title over and over. I'm not musically gifted so I have no idea where to even start imagining an original tune, haha..

Looks very cool, some people say the "animated school" cartoons are overused, I disagree this is an example of how creativity on that genre may have a good use, for example theres was a cartoon called wayside about kids who are crazy and go to a vertical badly constructed school, wich was just too boring and random, and the jokes sometimes badly placed, now for example this has the simple concept, a kid his friends and alot of place to make good jokes, kinda like also when Antonucci made the Ed's start attednign school, it was random but the jokes made sense.

I don't think there's anything random about putting the Eds in school, but I agree that EEnE did a good job avoiding the boring ol' format of a school show even when it DID become a school show.
Hoop-a-Joop is not a school show, though. The kids go to school because that's what kids do during the day, but they are never dealing with "school problems." Like, they'll just sit in class and talk about the storyline that's happening in their personal relationships, or have personal disputes with their classmates, but it'd never be about them having to do homework or take a school picture or boring stuff like that. EEnE made that mistake a few times, but they are fortunately a very active show and were capable of making those kinds of stories more entertaining.

Yes but jst a small correction to myself even if I didnt explain myself rather well, I think Danny did a good job giving the Ed's that transition between episodes from the cul-de-sac to the school, it didnt feel rushed and like I said some jokes were a bit random but made sense overall since they had to do with the plot for the episode, example, eddy sending stuff to his korean pen pal, and that sarted with ed lifting kids up and taking gum from under the seats, it was random and unexpected but it did have a follow through, hope your show gets noticed by some cartoon studios like Cartoon Network, god knows they are mostly stuff like 3d shows or poorly dubbed anime's or stuff made by man of action, atleast they are like that on portugal, so sick of not seeing a good show, always the goddamn kids games/ anime things and a kid who turns into mechanical objects generator rex i think was the name.

I could definitely see a ska/scat, sort of big-bang-jazz-rock style of theme song being put to this! It's great, it reminds me a lot of the 90s Nicktoon and Cartoon Cartoon intros, actually. Amazing work as always!

Thank you! I was mostly going for the feel of Doug and Rocko's intros. hahaha, that's quite a lot of different styles of music, and exactly why I have a hard time choosing/imagining it. There are so many good options!

Tora-Yakari In reply to AnimatEd [2012-01-31 01:25:48 +0000 UTC]
I definitely thought of the Doug intro! So you really got that down.
I'm thinking like a mix of the 90s ska and swing revivals, like something like a cross between Reel Big Fish/The Aquabats and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy/Squirrel Nut Zippers?

AnimatEd In reply to Tora-Yakari [2012-01-31 01:30:31 +0000 UTC]
Ooooh, I have considered Aquabats as being able to make a good Hoop song! And I'm familiar with those last two bands, but I feel more tied to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (apparently EEnE's composer did a secret cover of one of their songs for the MisEdventures soundtrack, and I looooove it + one of my friends loves that band).
I've also considered Neil Cicierega, and I guess I should never forget how great They Might Be Giants is!

Okay first. MAX AND YOTAM? ;D Ha, ha. (Not sure who the guy on the end is but I'm sure it's someone you like. *Because of the VIP pass/Dogtag/ID on their necks*
I think you could have made the bed float down a little more softly. (Slowing down when it got close to changing direction, then speeding back up.)
The overall theme intro is just beautiful and very full of energy. ;D Well animated and tells the viewer a lot about the characters without any words/music.
Love the logo. You pulled off a great effect with the curtain. Looks great. You deserve your chance to make this show a reality.

Whaaat, those designs don't look anything like Max and Yotam. : D The guy on the end is sort of Emo Philips but I drew him pretty bad.
Yeah, something was iffy about the bed floating animation to me too.. I'm not good at motion tweens, I should've just made an attempt to animate it frame by frame.
Thank you very much, that's what I was going for!

This is great. It's nice and fast-paced.
Your idea to have an original song for this I think is better than using something already out there. I think there'd be a measure of legitimacy to it that using something pre-established wouldn't have. If that makes any sense. Ooh I hope you find someone. You know, you could try to contact some people. The musicians who did the music for home-stuck, their names are on the credits of the music section. And a lot of those songs are really good on their own.
You said you storyboarded this out in September. How long did it take? How many panels did it end up being? Can I see your storyboard? :3
I drew a storyboard like half a year ago that I've been meaning to clean up and just... get kind of intimidated by the shear amount of work there would be to it since it's over 100 panels in just it's rough state. I draw out my little rectangle and then go find other things to do. It's nuts.

Thank you! The Homestuck musicians have crossed my mind, but I'm not sure how experienced they are with non-video game style music and I feel like I should wait until this is a real show anyway so I can have some composers audition for me. I've got a few I'm partial to already, but I don't feel like I'll be able to pick until a composer is actually trying to fit the mood of Hoop.
I probably storyboarded this over just a night or two. I changed a lot of drawings/added poses so that this animation would look good, but I'll try to take some phone pics of the storyboards for kicks anyway. XD
I started storyboarding a pilot for Hoop back in October, but I had so many other things to do and now it seems too tedious to get back to, haha. Maybe I should do that now that I've got a little free time....
