Description Northeastern Montana, USA
Aprox. 5 or 6 seconds after Impact.

Some 1,864 miles to the north of Ground Zero in the Gulf of Mexico, the first sign of the disaster for the animals living in western North America is a bright flash of light on the horizon. The explosion itself superheats and supercharges the air particles around the impact point, creating a searing, instantaneous burst of white hot plasma. This plasma burst lasts for only a few moments, but it burns far brighter than even the surface of the sun, and is strong enough to blind dinosaurs far from Ground Zero.

A pair of Triceratops grazing on the plains are blind-sighted by the impact flash. Startled, they momentarily mill about in a panic while trying to avert their gaze. The light sears their eyes, blinding. As the overwhelming light fades in silence, they turn their heads toward the south and spot a distant glow illuminating the horizon. As it radiates an eerie red and orange light, the two Triceratops look on to survey the scene for any sign of danger. They sniff the air intently, attune their ears for any threatening sounds, and (through somewhat blurred vision) scan the landscape. Everything is quiet. No scent of predators. No unnerving sounds. No cause for alarm. Nothing to worry about. The strange light becoming a part of the background, the Triceratops settle down and resume grazing. Unbeknownst to them, and many other dinosaurs elsewhere in the world, the effects of the distant disaster will make themselves felt mere minutes from now...
                                                                                               -----------------------------------

I gotta be honest, I'm not especially proud of how this piece turned out. Along with entries 2 and 3, this is my least favorite of the pieces I've made for this series so far. It doesn't really match what I was initially going for here. The way it turned out just feels way too subdued, not really evocative of the eeriness and silent unease that would've been felt during this moment. The color palette isn't that striking, there's a lack of intensive shadowing and lighting, and the scale feels like it could use some adjustment. I don't know. I think I might redo this one and the other two I mentioned sometime in the future. I just feel like I could do so much better with these scenes.

Don't you hate it when a rock from space ruins your date?
