Description
For the rule of Thirds; The first principle was really helpful, it's somewhat similar to an example from a bird eye view perspective. By dividing my first layer in a 3x3 grid, I was able to pick which box would be better to envision where the center of the illustration would star. I was inspired by Simone Ferriero to also use a spiral shape. But where he used it as the base for a telling of his journey as an artist, I saw the shape of a portal. So to make mine different, I decided to go with my gut instinct and do a portal. This project was drawn before Halloween, so I figured falling into a nightmare sounded way cooler.
For Cohesion & Harmony; For the choice of details & objects for my composition project. I decided to reuse my OC from a fanfic comic series I'm still working on. He is the center and the staple of the drawing, the main protagonist falling downward into the unknowable. Inspired by one of the twelve steps of the Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell. But the step I chose is the beginning of the protagonist's process to go through Growth & Evolution in said journey.
Step 2) The Call to Adventure!
I thought the easiest and most fun way into adventure is a dream teleporting into imagination, whether it be a vision quest or a nightmare of a future story. The color choices are depictions of the psyche, but portal designs give an easier visual of a door into the unknown.
I feel the beginnings play an important part in the process for both the protagonists Growth throughout their journey, and the Evolution of layers to their character and world building potential. Many will disagree, not like, or think there's no connection. But I stand by what's said. The beginnings are overlooked, the greatest of endings start with humble beginnings.
My OC isn't facing the nightmare alone, for traveling with him are two animal spirit designs I decided to reuse from one of my older illustrations. www.deviantart.com/animationfa…
True story, the spirits I design are based on two animals that visit me in a recurring dream, three times in a row. The one in the upper left is a Spider that breathed purple smoke, embodying the father figure to the psyche. The one on the bottom left is a Bat with glowing pink eyes, embodying the psyche's mother figure. Two opposites that make one whole, revolving around the opposite. I don't want to reveal too much information, mainly because I wanted their names, plot, powers, and character roles to be a secret for now. Not until Stage 4 of the Hero Journey that I think is more appropriate story wise.
Reusing these three characters as best as I could when coming up with the Cohesion, I don't know if it has much harmony though. This is outside my normal skill set, so I was trying to give 110%. But all in all, I thought it would be fitting to reuse them considering I view them as building blocks when I started to post my work online. I plan on reusing this illustration for a comic panel scene in a future comic page soon. But, I'll have a lot more pages to sketch out first.
For Color Theory; As for the colors, I wanted the theme to be "falling into a nightmare loop". So I also owe some credit to growing up watching Tim Burton, John R. Dilworth, and both retro horror comics & 60's rock album covers. So I chose shades of greens resembling ectoplasm & sickly fog clouds. Blues resembling freezing on a cold night or under the moonlight. To give off a psychedelic nightmarish epiphany, I included neon pink & gold yellow colors here and there. As for the portal design, I owe credit to watching Rick and Morty. But I wanted my portal to be different. Instead of falling into a dimension, it's the feeling of falling into the deepest part of the human psyche. Giving off a sense of fear of the unknown. For what does the subconscious tries to reveal when we dream. So I chose these colors and reusing the spiral shape to swirl together in the middle. creating the dream scape structure you see before you.
But I feel maybe I should have pick more color options and color combos now. I've shown this to a couple of people I know in real life, the results were given a 7/10. But the really opinion belong to you the viewer.
