Description Beast: The Raijuu
Head Count: 1
True Name: Akanou ("the Lightning God", "A Flash in the East")
Sounds Like: Alan Oppenheimer [ the G'mork from "The Neverending Story"]
Known Host: Uchiha Sasuke
Leitmotif: Requiem for a Tower

The only single-headed Beast, the Raijuu is often considered the most ‘normal’ of his kin, but that’s not saying much. His true name is Akanou.

The Raijuu is an enormous wolf with two tails and piercing bright ice-blue eyes. Its fur is a blend of silvers and stormy blues with a ruff of long fur around his neck, throat and shoulders, barely obscuring his collar-mark. His voice is very deep and masculine and he has an easily triggered temper.

The Raijuu does not like being known as a Beast, preferring to identify himself as a Wolf Spirit. He is careful to groom his ruff over his collar-mark, hiding it as best he can. His relationships with his fellow Beasts vary from distain to outright hatred and pressing the issue is guaranteed to set him off.

The Raijuu’s powers revolve around lightning and storms, he can shoot bolts with precision and at varied range, and his howls are loud enough to shake the land. When in battle, the Raijuu’s chakra materializes as a pair of wing-like structures at his shoulders, all his fur standing on end in mad disarray. While he does have complete control over his powers, any time he goes berserk can cause dangerous thunderstorms in his wake, even growing into tempests if he is not calmed down. Old legends suggest that humans caught in his turmoil would seek the help of local wolf packs and even Okami spirits to curb his rage.

Despite being rather standoffish in nature, the Raijuu is a social creature and will eventually attempt to connect with his host. His reputation with previous holders is varied; most found him unbearable to deal with, but a few did consider him amiable and even helpful at times.

Akanou’s reputation with other Yokai/Animal Spirits is significantly better than the rest of the Beasts combined. He is very polite and civil to them, and for the most part he is quite welcome with the Okami packs. If only his temper didn’t keep getting in the way...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things Akanou does like:
- Meat
- Running free
- Wolves/Okami
- Moonlit mountain nights
- A few of his hosts

Things Akanou does not like:
- All the other Beasts
- Humans
- Stupid questions
- Being indoors/confined
- Most of his hosts
- Wolves in any sort of peril
- Cabbage
- Citrus fruits
- Loads of other things

Akanou’s design was inspired by a mix of various wolves in media; "Balto", the Russian "Maugli", "Wild Kratts", etc... but particularly by Moro in “Princess Mononoke” (the Japanese version), for the voice and twin tails.
This design may be subject to change, but right now all it needs is a color-scheme!

The first of a big collab between and myself, following her concept for a version of "Naruto" based on it's original pilot chapter.
Among many other things, alongside the Bijuu are a new group of nine beasts. However, instead of multiple tails, we're talkin' multiple heads! Isn't that just super!

I've been thinking: maybe we should change his voice actor to Alan Oppenheimer, G'mork from The Neverending Story...

Really? I was digging his 'Goliath' voice, but if you say so.
A big freaky scary wolf-thing voice for another big freaky scary wolf-thing, eh?

Yep, especially against a stormy backdrop...^^

Oh, and since you recommended Idris Elba for Kaku, what role of his did you have in mind?

The stuff of awesomeness and probable nightmares! O.o

Actually it sounds suitably Norse Mythos-ish doesn't it? XD

UberChimerism In reply to animon [2013-07-14 16:23:26 +0000 UTC]

Y'know, it really does, especially considering that Norse mythology had its own giant wolf, Fenrir...

And couldn't you see Sasuke and Akanou unwittingly having a confrontation a la Atreyu and G'mork? That would be something, especially if it was Sasuke's first encounter with his dark passenger...

Exactly! XD

Yep, thought of that too!
A tad freakier than Naruto's first meeting with the Fox was, I would think... that bit of the NE movie was scary. o_o

This is awesome~ The anatomy OMG I wanna melt because this is so awesome!.

I'm wondering if you don't mind me asking. How do you get the lines to look like that? What I mean is that they're fuzzy-ish and very thin? What size pixel brush did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

animon In reply to crisisastar15 [2012-11-26 23:35:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much!

I work with the combination of the image set at at rather large size (3000 width, for example) and having the brush at 2 to 4 size with the spacing settings set to 1%. I keep the pen pressure on, use the the pen tool when needed and just mess around until it looks nice!
Scaling the finished image down can make the lines look thinner and smoother too, just to finish things off!

Oh it's certainly my pleasure~

And hmm.. I see. Buut I wonder.. Is the peen tool better than just using a paint brush or pencil tool?

animon In reply to crisisastar15 [2012-11-27 00:35:12 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't say it's better exactly, but it is useful as an option to lining by hand.

Another thing I was thinking for all the Beasts: assign leitmotifs for them. So far, I recommend Requiem for a Tower for this guy, and the Red Dragon Soundtrack Suite for Buchi.

animon In reply to UberChimerism [2013-01-21 15:47:13 +0000 UTC]

I love the idea of leitmotifs! And good choices there, too.
A rising storm for the Raijuu, and a creepy drone for the giant ball of demonic rage that is Buchi.

How about this piece for the Nue? [link]
I find it hits the balance between disconcerting and soothing, suitable for a troubled and almost restless sleep.

And also for a creature who can sing a duet with himself! Alright, we'll use this for Tsuguo. And please, post the leitmotifs on their bios with links when you upload them!

UberChimerism In reply to animon [2012-10-30 01:23:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh, and about the Wolf Spirits mentined in this bio? Here's what I was thinking for them: what if they were among certain species of demon animals who refused to Humanize themselves? In my Naruverse, Demon Animals are demons who refused to take on human forms (Humanization) as opposed to Animal Demons, who have Humanized themselves.

What say you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

animon In reply to UberChimerism [2012-10-31 16:52:48 +0000 UTC]

That sounds pretty good! I imagine not every Spirit would want to involve themselves with humans/ninjas for many reasons, and those based on wild animals and nature would definitely keep their distance.

In my own head-canon for example, Any Spirit/Yokai can learn how to make human illusion/disguise (although its only as convincing as they bother to make it) and its a pretty common skill to have. But most of them don't bother using it to distance themselves from the trouble-making humans, and major Spirits like Okami are among the most notable for being against wanton use of it, or Spirits and humans mingling at all for that matter.
Its that kind of situation I can get behind, since 'Naruto' never made use of many Animal Spirits in general!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UberChimerism In reply to animon [2012-11-01 00:53:09 +0000 UTC]

I also imagine there could be some speciesism between them, like: Demon Animals would despise Animal Demons as traitors because of their human forms and Animal Demons would sneer at Demon Animals for refusing such a boonTo Animal Demons, human forms are a boon because it allows them to perform more spells and use weapons in addition to their animalistic powers, thus giving them an advantage against humans and Demon Animals

And yes, Kishimoto missed out on so much opportunity...but that just means more for us!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

animon In reply to UberChimerism [2012-11-01 01:01:49 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! Even with just the concept of Spirits/Yokai and their relationships with humanity in a world like 'Naruto', there's so much to work with!
Kishi totally missed out, but all the more fun for us indeed!
