“You plead not guilty, there’s a trial, you’re almost certainly found guilty, and you do jail time. Maybe as much as a year. Res ipsa loquitur, and all that.”
“What was that? Res, what?”
“Res ipsa loquitur. The thing speaks for itself. You were found behind the wheel of a car crashed into—and destroying—the statue of our town’s most beloved personage. Beyond that, the state prosecutor will have access to medical records showing your blood alcohol content three times the legal limit; and she will have estimated damages to the statue well over five hundred dollars. That makes this a felony, which is why we are here today.”
Mickey Pickle glanced around the tiny conference room her attorney, Julie Justice, had secured for this pre-hearing conference. Her summer was not off to a good start. “And what if I plead guilty?”
Julie nodded. “Let me start by saying
