Description
Just a little note - I had this one done in a specific color and had originally named it that color with the vortex (can't remember the color now - I think it was blue) and like a dummy, I renamed it and lost the gradient. Arghhh...So, I made another gradient that would work and ended up with a rainbow colored vortex instead of a blue one.
Apophysis 2.05b2 or b2z+ or b2z+c+r5 (I never know what one I'm going to use and never remember what version it was when I'm done. *grin*) and Liz's modified plastic script in the following download.

I'm very glad that I know you and can ask you about Apophysis! There is soooo much to learn! (Did your little "fear" mood guy find his way into your message by accident?) That's very interesting about frequency, and your naming system makes sense. Mine is much more chaotic, so far. The gradients we save can't be renamed, can they? I seem to be given the option of renaming a gradient, but then it doesn't work.

As far as renaming is concerned, yeah, I've found the same thing. But a work-around is this... load the gradient into a fractal then save it again with the new name. After you've done that, delete the one with the old name.
Hmmm... Not sure what you're saying about the fear mood guy... it must have been a mistake.
Yes, there is a lot to learn, and I'm still learning even though I've been doing it for years. I guess it's one of those programs where we'll never learn it all... and then they'll come out with a new version and we will need to learn new stuff all over again.

Hi! I'm going to use this spot to reply to your comment that's way up above because there's literally no room left to write up there! Is it possible that you have your comments arranged differently or that you see them differently? I see them "nested," and eventually they end up so far to the right side of the page that each line would consist of only one word!
From what you say about the rose turning into a spiral, the DC_image plugin is something different. Turning a picture into a similarly-shaped fractal sounds like fun, though! The new plugin is different because it uses the image you put in without changing it much. You then change it by hand using the Editor. I don't have much experience with the plugin yet. I hope to try it out some more!
I have Apo versions 2.02, 2.05 beta, 2.05 beta 2 (I don't really use these first three versions), 2.06 beta, 2.06 beta Z+, 2.06c 3D, 2.07 beta, 2.08 beta 2, 2.08 3D, 2.09, and 7x.15. What a list!
I'm no good with the mutate window at all. Maybe I haven't learned how to use it properly yet? Or maybe it just sucks?(!) I find that it usually just makes a mess. There are one or two scripts with which it works well. I don't find it slow. Do you? I'm using Windows XP, like you. What do you think of the mutation window? Has it helped you make some nice-looking fractals?

Ahhh... yes, we must be looking at our messages differently. I use my message center an there is only one message at a time. I have my messages set to display as nested when I'm on a page, but here in the center I only get one... and there is a button to look at the original. Not knowing how you have your stuff set up I can't really know what's going on with you. I really don't understand why you are seeing messages stacked that deeply.
Do you have an envelope icon on the top of the page? I'm positive you must have... and do you click on the arrow beside it and click on "View all messages"? I'm sure you do this too. I think? Gosh, now I'm really confused!
I didn't explain the image thing well enough. The image isn't changed, they just had many roses creating a spiral. I've not tried the dc_image plugin. It sounds like I should. Do you have to have a special image format?
LOL... yeah, you have a lot of versions too. Do they all still work? I would love to get ahold of your 2.06 beta Z+. That was a good version!
The mutate window is tricky and no one ever tells you to slow down the speed. When I use the window, I slow it down to about .02.. I think... at least I slow it WAY down from where it starts so it's just giving a slight change to the fractal. I've used it a lot to get some interesting effects into my fractals... but you've got to slow down the speed or you're right... it just makes a mess of things.
Interesting that it seems like I'm the only one have a huge slow down with the mutation window in 7x. I've got 4 gigs of memory, so it shouldn't be that. Hmmmm... don't know what it is!

Anj

Hi!
Now I think that old Apo version with the images sounds even nicer! I'll have a look and see whether I can still download it from the Net. If you're interested in 2.06 beta Z+, you can download it here: [link] . It is a really nice version, with interesting variations. Yes, I still use all of the versions I have except the earliest three, as I said. Those work too, but I'm trying to keep my life simple! I didn't realize that the mutation speed had to be slowed down that much. Thank you for this wonderful advice! I've heard of several people who can't use Apo 7x due to slowness problems. I'm not sure why that would happen either.

I have noticed that 7x runs at less than half the speed of 2.09. It's really amazing how different it is working in 2.09. I worked in that all night last night for a change.
Thanks for the link... I've downloaded it.
You know about the problem the earlier versions had with plugins, right? How you can only put about 20 in at once? I think someone might have pushed that up to 25 or so, but as I remember (and my memory is foggy) is that no one was ever able to make it up to 30.
BUT... on the other hand... I have the problem with 7x that some of the earlier versions had variations that it doesn't have and that there is no plugin for. Perspective is one, I think. So I'm going to need to figure out which of my older versions have perspective, because I had some nice fractals with that.
So I will play with this one a little too. I think I mentioned before that I really liked 2.06.

Anj

How strange about 7x working so slowly! I've never noticed a speed difference between 7x and 2.09. I think I read that 7x version b was supposed to fix something that was slowing down the original 7x. Yes, the older Apo versions are limited to about 27 plugins (if that). Apo 7x is much more convenient. However, I don't swap my plugins that often, so I don't find the limit in the older versions to be much of a problem. What I LOVE about 7x is the grid! It makes it much easier to know where the centre of the image field is!
Apophysis 2.04-JF2b is no longer on the Internet or on dA. Joel says he no longer has it. You have a treasure there!

Well, my dear... if you would give me your email address I could send it to you.
I never noticed the grid in 7X, or I have it turned on in all my Apo versions. One of the two. I believe that in all the later versions it is something that can be turned on and off in the options. I could be wrong though. Maybe it's just something that can be turned off and on in 7x and I never turned it on.

Anj

I've sent you my email address in a Note. Thank you!
Do you see the green "Run script" arrow in the row of symbols at the top of your Apo 7x window? Two symbols to the left of it there may be a symbol that's a small box with lines in it. It says "Show guidelines" when you hold your mouse over it. If you click on it, the guidelines appear. They go away if you click on it again. It is something you can enable in the Tools. I should have a look and see whether other version of Apo have this too!

fractal1 In reply to anjaleck [2012-05-15 18:21:41 +0000 UTC]
Well, if I have a fractal that I'd like to have centered (a star or flower shape, perhaps), I can easily see from the lines where the centre of the window is. I just slide the fractal to where I want it. The lines are also very useful for checking rotation. It's sometimes hard to tell just be looking at the picture or by the numbers whether an image is really straight. The grid also shows the window divided into thirds so that we can apply the famous "rule of thirds" if we want to. Such fun!

Sweetie, don't get obsessed with stuff like this. The lines are there in case we feel a need to use them. Our eyes and minds are very good at deciding what looks good - -better than any guide lines, I think!

Normally I wouldn't say this, I feel like I am being sooo forward to do so, but I really do think you'll find more. This is one of my "Something Different" series... and there are ones of this series I like a whole lot better than this one.

Thank you so very much for the compliment!
