You know what sparked that? When Scar told him that he killed Mufasa, the bond he shared with him was immeasurable so for him to hear that gave him unnatural strength right there and gave him a reason to stand up against Scar. Even though Simba was losing, one move changed the outcome. It's amazing what you can do when you love someone very much.
