Ha ha, that's exactly how it should have been! xD Alternate verse for the win ...

I kept waiting and waiting and waiting, and then waiting some more to finally meet Saren when I played ME for the first time. I kept hearing about him everywhere but never seem to catch up to him. at one point I was starting to wonder whether HE was actually the rumour and not the Reapers ...

But, alas, I finally did meet him in person and I was hardly let down.

I was so looking forward to finally getting to know him. They built it up so you would believe he'd be totally deranged ... but when you finally do meet him in person and hear him speak, he's not nearly as demented as you were expecting.

Well, he's supposed to be smart ... I'm glad I didn't read the Revelation novel before playing the game though, he was portrayed like a simpleminded thug in there ... I'm struggling through the third novel right now, and the author seems to revel in describing violence in great detail rather than giving character to the people.

Yeah, I know ... the first time I played, I had set the game up to the hardest setting by accident, so I ended up battling Saren for an hour at least before I finally defeated him. I didn't get that special Paragon moment with him then ...

Anjian In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-01-12 02:45:16 +0000 UTC]

I agree. What annoyed me the most was the krogan mercenary, though. For being hundreds if not thousands of years old, he's not very cunning. Sure, krogan aren't really the best-calibrated omni-tools in the kiosk, but you think he'd learn...

Saren's (Revelations) character didn't bother me that much. Yes, sure, he had the penchant for overkill, but the boy was 26. Anderson was older than him. 18 years can change people XD

oooh, ouch. *Wince.* Do you mean him on the hoverboard or what was left of him after Sovereign assumed direct control?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-01-14 13:03:45 +0000 UTC]

No I meant rather that the author seems to focus on describing the violence in great detail but he doesn't really explore the people and characters and their motivations and feelings. For example, I was curious about why Saren was so resentful of humanity. It was mentioned briefly right at the end that he lost a brother in the war, or something like that, but it would have been interesting to know more, to 'hear' his thoughts on the matter, don't you think?

I guess you're right about the krogan.

Funny, never thought of Saren as a 'boy'. But I guess he must have been one, once, a long time ago.

Lol, I never defeated robo-Saren that time. I didn't fully understand how the weapons upgrades and tech worked at all, so I had probably class 2 weapons and armour. Not the best choice for Veteran setting.

Took me half the game or more to realize I hadn't given Garrus new armour, he was still wearing his default C-SEC one. And I was so annoyed that he kept DYING the whole freaking time! xD

Ha ha, just proves that you probably should read the manual before you set out to play a complex game, no?

Anjian In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-01-14 22:49:10 +0000 UTC]

oh yes. Inventory system was a right old nightmare. Especially for the hoarding type of player XDD

But direct-control'd Saren gave me a fair bit of trouble as well. Especially since Engineers apparently did not have enough health to withstand rockets to the face.

As for Saren as a boy, well, i think he'd be one of those creepy, perceptive types. i.e. "Father, if pride is evil, why are we encouraged to make our homeworld proud?"

...*no response* XD

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-01-16 19:56:58 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha, like me?

Oh I see. I started out as Soldier, I don't think I've ever played as another class actually, that seemed to do the trick.

Oh, lol! Yes, definitely. Very perceptive!

I wonder where he's taste for killing and destruction came from though. Was it something he learned to appreciate and rely on, on his own, along the way, or did his father abuse him and turn him bitter or something??

Ha ha .. well you know, when you start playing a new Xbox game, it gives you all the instructions for what to do, so I figured it'd do that with Mass Effect as well.

"You will be required to salvage any additional equipment." Every. Single. Mission. XD

I've never played anything but Vanguard and Engineer, so. (Likes the fancy classes XD)

Somehow I doubt he was abused. Turian culture seems to be fundamentally against that sort of thing, since the parent would be taking advantage of his/her position of power. I imagine that's a big taboo in a rigid, hierarchal society, since if such abuse were accepted, it would collapse quite quickly.

Plus, compulsory military service at fifteen. Fifteen?? Excluding child soldiers, I believe humans have that at eighteen, generally. I don't know about you, but at fifteen, I was learning about tangents to a circle and the square of the hypotenuse.

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-01-16 21:38:55 +0000 UTC]

Lol, no I was only kidding, that's probably as far from my gaming style as possible. I hate strolling around just looking for crap.

I see. Well, I'm sure I'll try those eventually.

I'm sure it isn't entirely impossible. And it could have been mental abuse rather than physical? That can break a person down even further and more completely than just beating him up.

You know, I'm a bit confused about that. I just heard Executor Pallin describe C-SEC as being a civilian agency ... and that 'some' members have had military training. So perhaps it isn't as compulsory after all? God, I don't even remember ever BEING fifteen .. that was a lifetime ago!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anjian In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-01-18 22:51:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh, you're probably right about the compulsory thing. The turian government (not C-Sec, which i guess falls under Council jurisdiction) requires its citizens to serve the state in some capacity beginning at age fifteen, but it's not necessarily military (could be healthcare, policing, engineering etc.). It's just that all their social services tie in with their military structure, so that's why i thought it was. It probably wouldn't even apply to Citadel residents unless there's something like dual citizenship.

But. More background information about the First Contact forthcoming tomorrow!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-01-28 22:19:14 +0000 UTC]

Right, I guess I was staring myself blind at some data over at Mass Effect Wiki that stated 'all turians' do military service or something along those lines.

It also says most turians serve between the age of fifteen and thirty. Then what?? Do they retire at the age of thirty or something? I guess that could account for the number of mercenaries, thugs and just rude jerks around?

Yeah, I read the first comic, never thought I'd get my hands on this but a friend is able to import it for me, yay! This looks interesting! Can't wait to read more. I wonder if Desolas is Saren's brother? What do you think? We only know that Saren lost 'a' brother during the war, perhaps he even has several more siblings.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anjian In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-01-29 02:12:42 +0000 UTC]

LOL, it certainly would explain guys like Gavorn. But I think maybe that's the period for active duty. It would make sense if they could elect to stay afterward.

I wonder that, as well. I hope he is, since it would prove my theory that Saren has an older brother (he would be about 18 at the time, and Desolas' already a General) XDD

Selfish, i know.

But really. It seems snark runs in the family, if that's the case.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-01-31 21:23:00 +0000 UTC]

Gavorn? Why? He's a nice guy you know. Good thinking, perhaps they're chosen, so that only the most fit and proven soldiers and officers get to stay on after 30?

Hm, makes you wonder just how quickly a brilliant turian can advance through the ranks? So if Saren was 18, he would just about have completed basic military training at the time ... Assuming his brother is closer to thirty, turian females must suffer menopaus rather late in life?

I'm curious about this Desolas though, he doesn't seem as hostile as the opening scenes of the comic would have you believe, does he? I love his comment after his troops were tricked into an ambush by that false message of his.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anjian In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-02-03 17:21:44 +0000 UTC]

Gavorn seems like the retired-military man type. Primarily because he's nice and polite and utterly un-merc-like. Hehe.

If it's anything like the human military, not very quickly. Shepard's about 30, definitely brilliant, and a Commander. And somehow i can't work out how Saren would have become a Spectre at 20 if he wasn't already in the training programme by First Contact. They have to demonstrate battle prowess before they're even considered...

People live longer in the future (human life expectancy is over 100?), so large age gaps between siblings might be more common. (and kinda weird imo XD )

He's just bitter that his troops fell for it XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-02-04 11:18:18 +0000 UTC]

I see. I had the exact opposite idea of him, that he'd be a youngster. But you're probably right about that, he is a charming character for sure.

Mmm, I guess you're right about that too. I just wondered about that thing that most turian retire at the age of 30 (again). So Desolas could be a lot older than thirty in other words. I was starting to wonder if he might in fact be Saren's father, but I got it confirmed yesterday that they are brothers.

Yes, it seems a bit strange to me as well, that Saren would be a Spectre already by then. Then again, Nihlus was introduced into the Spectres after just a year of Saren tutoring, wasn't he?

Right, people live longer and give birth at 60! Didn't think of that, thanks.

Lol, I know, but some part of him still seemed to somehow appreciate it in a weird way. Perhaps even more so since the humans didn't slaughter them all but spared their lives. So in return Desolas, if that's him in the last panel, saves the humans for 'studying'. I'm really looking forward to the turian-human interaction in the coming issues. Any idea when the next one is out?

First of all, preview of the next comic: [link]
apprently it will be released on February 16. Can't wait

Too bad we don't see more of Gavorn. Or any of the Omega bunch, really. They're all interesting.

Yeah, the thought that Desolas might be some other family has also crossed my mind. But you beat me to that one. Let's hope he's not a red herring, and it was actually another brother who died. Because that would be cheap XD

Saren seems to be on some sort of tour of duty, and he seems be have some merit in the army (being allowed to deal with alien prisoners), so here's to hoping he's already a candidate.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-02-07 22:44:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I caught a page earlier but didn't really want to spoil anything by reading, so I just read the speech bubble where Saren confirmed Desolas is his brother. I was a bit surprised that Saren called him 'that bastard' though ... If Saren was so upset about losing a brother during the war, he wouldn't have thought of him that way, would he? So perhaps you're right and Desolas is red herring after all.

Indeed! Gavorn and Meln need more screentime, definitely.

I just realized something the other day .. that humans live a lot longer in the future, there's apparently a point where Shepard says some even reach 150. And since turian lifespans are supposedly equal to humans, they too must live that long. So, a turian female might be able to produce children for close to a hundred years! I'm sure she could pop out a few brothers and sisters during her fertile years. Perhaps there's even a mini-army of Arterius siblings stomping around out there.

I see. Now this'll be interesting for sure. Can't wait.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anjian In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-02-09 03:26:11 +0000 UTC]

Someone else called Desolas 'that bastard'. Saren was defending him. It's pretty certain that Desolas really is his brother. There's no way to have known that without reading the other speech bubbles XD

Mini-army of Arterius siblings? Just two of them almost doomed the galaxy... *shiver*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-02-09 14:22:16 +0000 UTC]

Oh ... I see. Sorry! I didn't really want to spoil anything so I just skimmed over the page until I found the proof of their kinship. But that's interesting though, I thought I saw that Desolas saved the humans, and if Saren was defending Des, it would appear Saren wasn't that resentful of humanity at first?

LOL! Well I .. hadn't considered it like that ...

Anjian In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-02-25 04:56:27 +0000 UTC]

It's out! So, what do you think?

Me, I think the turian husks are kinda creepy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-02-27 00:14:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, yah! Got my copy the other day. One thing that bugged me was that, Desolas, was it? or was it Saren? said that 'the war is over', and yet Desolas was still alive? I thought Saren's brother was supposed to die 'during' the war. So maybe Desolas isn't the brother lost? I hope so! Gosh, I SO adored his new improved look and facial tattoes in this issue.

Yeah they are. And why are they so BIG???

Hey, what do you think the odds are that Saren too is exposed to the artifact and has his artificial eyes just like Jack did?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anjian In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-03-05 19:29:03 +0000 UTC]

Mmm yes. Tattoos for the win! Though this comic may be confirming the facepaint theory of turian markings, since he didn't have them when out on the field. Maybe they don't have them for battle because they want the military hierarchy to be upkept, but not the colonial, apparently somewhat prejudiced ones? It would certainly simplify chains of command.

Also am very very tempted to give Saren those markings. *Nod nod.*

Well, we heard from a secondhand source (Kahlee I think?) that Desolas died 'during' the war. Maybe her information was unreliable.

As for the odds that Saren got those eyes from the artifact...I'm guessing 75%? But it would seem too contrived for me :/

What do you think about this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-03-10 15:31:28 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I thought the tatoos were merely a sign of where the turian was born? And being barefaced is a shame or at least indignity? Perhaps those not feeling proud of their birthplace, like for instance a merc-kid being born on Omega, might not want to so openly tell the story of their origin, maybe that's why there are seemingly quite a few tatoo-less turians around?

He he. He definitely deserves something .. and it should be very striking too!

Yes, maybe that's why this is a bit obscure. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens in the final two issues of Evolution.

It's either that and then or it's from when he gethified his body later on, when in contact with Sovereign I guess. But since the Illusive man seemed to get special abilities after being in contact with that artifact, it would make sense why Saren would be so drawn to the Reapers and their technology if he too was subjected to that thing.

One thing I can't figure out is this: is, or isn't, Saren a natural biotic? There's no mentioning of it in the novels and yet he seems to unleash a biotic attack on Virmire.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anjian In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-04-25 19:12:17 +0000 UTC]

Re: biotics
I like to think that he is a natural biotic. He keeps this a secret, though--all the better for blindsiding his enemies. However, judging by the fact that biotics aren't well respected in turian society and his high rank as of Evolution, he probably isn't. Sovereign could have given him those particular powers.

Also,

Evolution 4. Have you read it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Anjian [2011-04-26 09:57:56 +0000 UTC]

That's interesting, I hadn't thought about that possibility!

Yes, I was thinking it might have had something to do with his encounter with Sovereign, or the Geth.

No, I have to wait a few weeks for the last issue. How intriguing! Maybe it'll all be revealed in there!

Ha ha, I suspect Saren gets in touch, somehow with that artifact, and that's how he ends up having TIM-style eyes. But please, don't spoil the anticipation. I'm probably a lightyear off what actually happens anyway.
