Mara hadn't wasted a single day as a Trainee. He had practically steam-rolled through every task and chore assigned to him, studying and analyzing how the colony worked. He had done his own little observations when he was a kit, but as a Trainee a whole new perspective was open for him to explore and dissect. It wasn't too much of a surprise, then, when his graduation came by a few weeks into his apprenticeship.

The cats of Foxglove all gathered to congratulate his rank-up, welcoming him as a Gatherer into their ranks. It was endearing in a way, how the colony never missed a chance to celebrate and party. Mara stood perfectly still as Star-speaker Thorn Vine painted on his Rank Mark. The mood was so light and jovial. He could hear the cheers of his colonymates, and saw the smile on his chieftain's face. Over all, this should have been a truly proud moment for Mara.

Imagine his surprise, then, when he looked at his marking and felt nothing from his accomplishment.
