Description I was doodling today and thinking about all the tips I've picked up over the years. I'm still learning, of course, but I thought, "if I'd been told all these things right at the start, would I have improved faster?" So I decided to throw together a little tutorial summing up the major points I've learned by studying what other artists do. I'm no expert, but I did my best.

I drew it entirely on Paint Shop Pro 9 with my tablet, no reference. I didn't bother with detail and pretty lines and stuff, but I think it conveys my techniques pretty well. Hope it helps someone somewhere at least a little.

Nice, but may I ask, do you use different layers for each shade you use? Or do you put all the shades in one layer like "skin" and "clothes" and stuff?

I do all the shades on the same layer for the most part; I find the smoothing/smudging process isn't as effective over multiple layers. For detailed and/or complex shading, I will occassionally do it over several layers and combine them before smudging. More often, I do different layers for different colour areas, for ex. blue shirt on its own layer, black skirt on its own layer, etc. (though that doesn't really apply to the sketch I did for the tutorial...) Did I answer your question?
