Description You all may not agree with me on that point, but even when I was a Christian I would never have said anything like this to someone - let alone post it on the church lawn!

Lady on the right is my best friend Almond.

I would have agreed with this, when I was one. It makes sense to me, I just can't believe it all now. It makes sense, it's just not possible.... uhg...

When I was one I would've agreed with the idea but I would've never conveyed it this way. Christ was loving and I cannot understand trying to lead someone to Christ without involving love in the message or delivery. It's depressing.

Having read the entire discussion I agree with the titling, I am understanding of the choice of rhyming as a way of getting the point across, am not even remotely religious but can understand that there is a feeling that a creative message is more likely to get the point across than one that is straightforward (hence I gather the rhyme)...

I'm more put off by the 'bring a friend' bit - I really felt like that was bad judgement on their part, it doesn't fit with the rest of the message that they are trying to convey and it does make this sound a bit creepy to me.

I feel a bit sorry for many churches (speaking as an outsider to them) as the message that they are trying to convey becomes lost on an audience that is becoming innured to advertising of any kind (of which this is, on one level, just another advertisement)...I think that probably serves as a good reason for them looking for more 'forceful' messages and trying to make their message heard by using devices such as rhyming.

I don't know what the US is like but in Australia the number of people that attend traditional Church services has apparently fallen remarkably in the past ten years or so, with huge numbers turning away from traditional church-based religion...this seems to me to be pushing the churches into more and more strident messages and communications mediums to try to encourage people into their services - I've seen a lot of messages like this one on chruches out here...

Anyway, thought that I would do the discussion some justice and drop in my two cents worth!

Hmmm...yeah I think that the same sort of thing is happening in a lot of Western countries at the moment in fact...

The Australian government is of course still run as if Australia is a white Christian state but that is to be expected with the calibre of our Politicians!

Not a problem on contibuting, I like a good thoughtful chat

Anyone pretending to have the intellectual capacity to judge over the existence of a god should be put away for being very silly. Agnostics "know better". They (and I) don't waste their time on god-matters.
But good that you've drawn this to attention, of all the times I've been to the US I've never seen more out-of-place religious fanatics than anywhere else (I've been to islamitic countries too, but you expect them round there, you don't expect them in a country that tries to profile itself as the leader of the modern world).

if you're ever down south, take a look at the signs down here. i remember one read: "oh taste and see that the lord jesus is good!"

i can think of a handful of things wrong with that.

Ah yeah, and to answer MallardX's question: If you haven't seen a horror movie that contains Christians with a warped sense of their faith, you must be a communist. That sign reminds me that there should be an 11th commandment requiring one to keep one's beliefs to oneself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AnnieCatBlue In reply to zakenayo [2004-03-26 18:50:58 +0000 UTC]

I haven't been to the south yet, kind of afraid to!, but I was driving through Utah once and saw an enormous billboard that had photos of faces of leaders from the Mormon church along the bottom and the print at the top of the board said "REAL MEN DON"T NEED PORN!" I thought that was kind of bizarre. But maybe that's cause I hadn't seen anything like it before. Also, I may be a woman but personally I like dirty magazines.

LOL Amen on that 11th commandment! It's actually the first in my religion.

BRING A FRIEND TO HEAR ABOUT DEATH!

Christians are getting more marketing oriented, I've seen it at churches all over the country. It's a bit annoying, like you're buying your God from an infomercial.

Hi Almond! What a great name.

Mm hm basically. It's like my sweet little Christian mother says - "No matter how much they want him too God will never fit in a little box you can tie a ribbon around"

Yeah Almond's her nickname, derived from a longer one 'Amygdeloid', which means almond shaped.

I don't know that I find it creepy or eerie or some such, although I can see how the first lines can be construed as morbid. And starting off a conversation saying "you're gonna die" isn't exactly encouraging. But the bad, Hallmark card reject rhyme is the most off-putting. It reminds me of bad local television commercials.

Your friend Almond makes the scene more bearable, however.

Well, people show pix of themselves drenched in blood, mutilated as if dead, and genitals pierced, on this forum and you call this sign "creepy?" Evil? Most people that make these hideous photographic depictions of blood and death that they call "art" are in need of serious professional help. These are expressions of a tortured/warped mind and they probably need a serious course of psych meds!

If this sign is creepy and evil to you, I have grave concern as to WHY?

I don't perosnally use the aproach that these people use, but this sign is merely an expression of their concern for others. Nothing more.

I really love your work but I think I really think your classification of this is a wee bit warped this time.

First of all, I got too drawn into the discussion to remember to say a hearty thank you for the compliment to my work. Thank you very much, truly.

Secondly, when you say warped classification do you mean that you think this shouldn't go in family album or that the title shouldn't include the word creepy? I'm guessing the latter but just want to make sure.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

AnnieCatBlue In reply to DocMallard [2004-03-26 18:35:50 +0000 UTC]

Well for one there are different kinds of creepy. The blood and gore stuff doesn't usually strike me as creepy, I'm more effected by the psychological.

In my experience the kind of people who would put words like this on a sign are the same people who believe that women 'have a place' and that gays and anyone who isn't Aryan should be lynched. Actually, all those reasons are why Almond and her siblings were homeschooled - it's that kind of town.

Also, I wonder at the mental health of whomever would think that a morbid almost rhyme would woo people into their church. I showed this pic to my Christian Fundementalist roommate last night and he thought it was "disturbing".

People don't respond to concern when it's expressed like this. If you want to have an effect on people that will draw them in compassion works better than hell and damnation. Unless of course, as before mentioned, someone is an active member of a lynch mob, and then - like this town - they'll feel right at home.

In conclusion people like this give me concern over my life. It also disturbs me when people try to ram christianity down someone else's throat - Jesus did not do that and as a Christ follower you're supposed to act in his teachings. What else are they willing to do in his name that would shame and hurt him?

That is why I think this sign is creepy. (False fires do not give such heat that your skin melts and rolls from your flesh - 'witches' are still burned at stakes in many different places, including north america)

>The blood and gore stuff doesn't usually strike me as creepy, I'm more effected by the >sychological.

It's the mind thats fixated on blood and gore thats creepy. I see tons of blood in the hospital.

>In my experience the kind of people who would put words like this on a sign are the >same people who believe that women 'have a place' and that gays and anyone who isn't >Aryan should be lynched. Actually, all those reasons are why Almond and her siblings >were homeschooled - it's that kind of town.

NAZI's arent Christians. They are a neo-pagan religion. It is intellectually weak of you to try to transfer the teachings of Hitler to the teachings of Christ. Nothing you said in that paragraph is remotely connected with any teaching of Christ.

>Also, I wonder at the mental health of whomever would think that a morbid almost >rhyme would woo people into their church. I showed this pic to my Christian >Fundementalist roommate last night and he thought it was "disturbing".

I have found fear doesn't motivate too many people to change. I have only convinced two people too quit smoking by telling them if they continue with it they will die very young. One thanked me personally a long time later.

Likewise, there is the occasional person who will realize that forever is a long time to spend on the wrong side of judgment day and decide to do something about it.

>eople don't respond to concern when it's expressed like this. If you want to have an >effect on people that will draw them in compassion works better than hell and >damnation. Unless of course, as before mentioned, someone is an active member of a >lynch mob, and then - like this town - they'll feel right at home.

Again, a clumsy cliche. A broad brush attempt to smear Christians. I hope you can rise above such stupid statements. It reeks of immaturity. It is just as stupid as saying that all homosexuals are all pedophilic perverts. Really!

>In conclusion people like this give me concern over my life. It also disturbs me when >eople try to ram christianity down someone else's throat -

So when was the last time you were held at gunpoint and told to convert or die? You seemed to go out of your way to photograph the sign. Were you forced to read it at gunpoint? If so, you should have involved the police.

This isnt Red China or Korea. Last time I read the law we still had the right to speak about religion in public. If you dont like hearing it, no one forces you to listen.

>Jesus did not do that and as >a Christ follower you're supposed to act in his teachings. >What else are they willing to do in his name that would shame and hurt him?

You said you WERE a Christian. Do you remember "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation" They are simply doing what Jesus told them to do. I am sorry you dont like their style, but they will certainly be in better shape than you for it.

>That is why I think this sign is creepy. (False fires do not give such heat that your skin >melts and rolls from your flesh - 'witches' are still burned at stakes in many different > laces, including north america)

The last recorded witch execution was in the 1600s I believe. Witches were hung in both the English colonies and in England. Burning was saved for heretics convicted by the Catholic Inquisition in continental Europe.

Perhaps you are just watching too much TV?

You need to lighten up, learn tolerance, honor diversity, and stop hating.

Stick with art. You are MUCH better at it. Keep up the good work!

I was trying to discuss something with you and explain my reasons, not incite you into some ludicrous session of hurling judgements at me.

Please stop making an example of the kind of Christians of which everyone else who commented on this picture was speaking.

And by the way, I don't watch television and I study what I talk about before I say it. The fact that I do not agree with your suffocating views is no reason to speak to me the way that you did. If you are interested in 'flaming' someone the way that you have me please find someone who believes in hell and write to them instead.

Lighten up, learn tolerance, honor diversity and stop hating? What and who do I hate? I do not hate anything. I'm lighter than you would believe, and I am tolerant. I love diversity and that is why I do not trust the Christian 'Right'. I fear them but do not want to destroy them. I want to be left alone and not harassed. There was one stereotypical and hypocritical thing that you forgot to say to me: to not be judgemental.

I'm ending my side of the discussion now and with the phrase that I should have heeded before but didn't "If you can't say something constructive don't say anything at all".
