Description
I'm cosplaying Vriska @ Tracon this fall and this messy tut is mainly for my HS cosplay group mates, to show 'em how I on my behalf solved the horrid howthehellamIsupposedtomakethesehornsohgodhelpme-problem. I think I did pretty gooooooood. My way.So yeah. If this somehow happens to be of help to someone, Awesome! My work here is done.
cosplay © me
Homestuck © Andrew Hussie, respectively.
[EDIT] FAQ
-I got the styrofoam from a friend that worked at a construction site, blue EVA insulation foam scraps. It's sold at DIY/hardware stores in huge blocks.
-Any air dry clay will do, fimo airlight will get the most light effect tho.
-I dunno about the magnet-method since these might be too heavy, up to you to try it out. I experimented with snaps tho and those didn't work for me at least. So strings it was. Sturdiness accomplished. The headband is pretty easily hidden under the hair and/or through the wig.
-BY ALL MEANS, BE CREATIVE AND EXPERIMENT FURTHER! This is not the only and correct way to do this, just one solution I figured out. Such is the magic of cosplay. : )

Okay, my girlfriend made her Vriska horns out of clay and she's having trouble finding a way to get them to STAY on the headband. Can you offer any ideas?

Well I think she got the string-technique to work out for her and she's remaking another pair out of Styrofoam this time. Thanks for the feedback

to make the sharp shapes I recommend it. it's easy to sand too. of course you can try other material for that if you like, this is just my version

Thanks for the tutorial! I am putting together a Vriska cosplay right now, so this is really helpful. If you don't mind me asking, about how long were the finished horns? I am really bad at judging dimensions, I don't want to make them too long or super tiny.

Anniina85 In reply to BridgemasterAJohns [2012-03-11 13:37:46 +0000 UTC]
mine are about 12-13cm. I'd prefer them just a bit shorter though, hitting them everywhere has become a routine of mine at every con and photoshoot : DDDDDDD superglue is my friend.

Awesome, thank you! I will try to make mine a bit shorter than that then. And now I know to keep a tube of superglue with me!

Anniina85 In reply to SnailEggs [2012-02-05 14:34:38 +0000 UTC]
just some Scotch water based crafts glue that dries up hard and translucent. it's nice to fill all the little cracks. been holding just nicely after all the wear now

Lovely tutorials. Is model magic the best clay to use for the horns? Or is there a better alternative?

i'm a noob and want to make a pair based on the framing of the foam with wire technique so,... how did you work the wire around so it didn't chip off or break??? ?w? kinda like.. snake it through then wrap around then snake through again??
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Anniina85 In reply to InuDemon1992 [2011-11-19 16:16:35 +0000 UTC]
chip off or break? The wire or the foam you mean?
The wire i used has a plastic coating in it so it's quite durable and won't rust through (if that was somehow to happen). The styrofoam is quite sturdy so it'll stay in one piece pretty nicely, but be careful still not to bend it too much.
The style is kinda free with this but yeah, first form the tip of the horn, then stick the other end of the wire through the foam (from almost the tip of the horn to the bottom if you can) and wrap around it to make the construction stand still firmly, and for the paperclay to have something to stick into.
I hope this helps~

I have a quick question. What type of fixative did you use?
Also, this is a wonderful, simple, easy tutorial. I made my horns with this method and I love them.

Anniina85 In reply to LavastormSW [2011-11-10 00:33:45 +0000 UTC]
It's Hanart colorless fixative, if that matters.. any kind works just fine.
Thanks, that's nice to hear! : )

(sorry for being so late) thanks! <3
I got my foam from a friend and the wire from some art store.. I think the hardware stores should have both.

It's alright, I already made mine. But thanks for responding anyways. The foam I used was terribly difficult to carve, I'll check the hardware store next time. Dx

This is brilliant! Thank you so much. This will be very helpful for my Vriska cosplay ^^
I was just wondering how you put them on to stop the headband from showing as I can't see how to get the horns through the wig like most people reccommend. Thanks for your help!

Anniina85 In reply to XxXPrincessIzzyXxX [2011-10-08 17:00:55 +0000 UTC]
I didn't stick the horns through the wig, instead I just put the ends of the headband through the wig and the rest on top of my head I hid with strands of hair. that method also helped the horns to stay put like a dream.
Thanks a lot and np! <3

hey, are you supposed to take the yarn out or leave it to tie around the headband?
also in the 4th pic how did you test them on your head with out the headband?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Anniina85 In reply to sierra0333 [2011-09-21 17:30:23 +0000 UTC]
the yarns sole function is to tie them up with the headband, why would you cut them off? : D when you've tied them, THEN you can cut the excess ends of course. In the 4th pic i had the headband tied to them for testing
