Description
I'm cosplaying Vriska @ Tracon this fall and this messy tut is mainly for my HS cosplay group mates, to show 'em how I on my behalf solved the horrid howthehellamIsupposedtomakethesehornsohgodhelpme-problem. I think I did pretty gooooooood. My way.So yeah. If this somehow happens to be of help to someone, Awesome! My work here is done.

Homestuck © Andrew Hussie, respectively.
[EDIT] FAQ
-I got the styrofoam from a friend that worked at a construction site, blue EVA insulation foam scraps. It's sold at DIY/hardware stores in huge blocks.
-Any air dry clay will do, fimo airlight will get the most light effect tho.
-I dunno about the magnet-method since these might be too heavy, up to you to try it out. I experimented with snaps tho and those didn't work for me at least. So strings it was. Sturdiness accomplished. The headband is pretty easily hidden under the hair and/or through the wig.
-BY ALL MEANS, BE CREATIVE AND EXPERIMENT FURTHER! This is not the only and correct way to do this, just one solution I figured out. Such is the magic of cosplay. : )

(well if they are in your head you might have a problem JKJK)
you could try pinning the horns to your head with bobby pins? or use a different headband, try positioning it differently, etc.

- aHHH YOU'RE LIFESAVER AND A GREAT HORN MAKER!
i have a few questions, where can i get some styrofoam from? could i be able to find it at a crafts store, and what brands would be the best for making horns? and same question for clay, since i have some 'magic-sculpt' clay, but i've never used it
and also i've gotten the idea that using magnets instead of a headband might work and look better, but i'm looking for an opinion from an experienced cosplayer. my father works in an assortment of types of scrapping and building of different things, and can easily get me a few strong as hell and durable magnets that aren't going anywhere. yknow, like superglue one magnet into a hole in the bottom of the horn, and have the other (hopefully a flatter one) under the wig, so there's no visible strap or attachment?

Thank you! I've answered similar questions a million times already but maybe just this once...

Omg this tutorial is awesome! But I must know what kind of Styrofoam you used. The stuff I got is too crumbly. I'm totally using this for my terezi horns! >:]

take a piece of foam about the thickness of the horn, draw a guideline and cut it with a box cutter, keep rounding it up little by little until you're satisfied. easy peasy. hot glue works if you screw up and it breaks

So it is rather light-weight, compared to other homemade horns?

I believe they are because she made them out of Styrofoam.

Also, do you think this would work with any other horns? Like, this method?

I'm going to put together a little 'tutorial' showing what all I bought and what different techniques and tutorials I used and I am DEFINITELY including this and the robo arm one~!
Keep up the awesome work~!

Never a problem!
And thanks! The arm is going great! I was worried at first when I started with the colors, it was looking kinda shaky, but when I started building up with the darker colors, I was becoming really proud~! XD
The horns turned out really great too! I just have to paint them.

When you put them on, did you put them on under or over the wig?
(That is a wig, correct? o.o)

I put the ends of the headband through the wig and hide the rest with "hair". it stays on place pretty nicely that way too.

I'm confused. Vriskas horns are: the double spiked one on the left and the single spiked one on the right. Because of double spiked horn is on the same side as her seven eye thing and arm that was ripped off which is her left side...right?
So then why do all most cosplayers cosplay her sides backwards? Or is there a reason? Or am I crazy?
//this isn't me trying to say your wrong because I doubt you are its just been destroying my mind I'm sorry
By the way LOVE the tutorial, it worked 100% for me!! <3

you are totally right. well, mistakes happen, I guess. I'm guilty of that myself when wearing my mindfang at a con, the sleep deprivation did good with my concentration and I ended up walking the whole day with my horns wrong, through the photoshoots and everything aargh headdesk : DDD
I'm glad to hear!! thanks! <3

Few questions..
1. what kind of glue? hot glue or regular glue?
2. the fixative to give it a shine... what kind?
3. the styrofoam... its blue? any kind of brand?
~ please let me know as soon as you can. thanks

Anniina85 In reply to Maximum-Ride14 [2013-07-11 20:10:17 +0000 UTC]
1) I used crafts glue (erikeeper) but any glue that sets hard will do, hot glue, epoxy..
2) haha I just used those setting sprays for artwork
3) blue one yes, finnfoam as we call it, it's very sturdy, used as insulation and stuff in buildings. ask hardware stores, they just sell it in over 2m sized huge ass blocks though, might be a bit overkill for just a pair of horns. my sisters bf works at the construction site and had snatched some excess pieces, I got mine from him~ but yeah, basically just use what you can find. : )
oh, and the least, for the clay I suggest you use fimo airlight, that stuff weighs practically nothing

pollywan123 [2013-06-17 02:19:02 +0000 UTC]
About how much did all the pieces of the horns cost?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Anniina85 In reply to pollywan123 [2013-06-17 11:34:27 +0000 UTC]
well, they cost practically nothing really, cheap modelling clay 3-4€(although I suggest fimo airlight nowadays, it's about 8-9€), wire a few €.. other stuff I already possessed like paints, foam.. it's acrylic paint btw, a cheap brand set of those can cost like, 5€ if you don't have any.
so practically you can go with 10-20€, no biggie!

Anniina85 In reply to akatsuki96yay2 [2013-06-17 11:40:24 +0000 UTC]
why not, yeah. with using fimo airlight, that weighs practically nothing, you could make bigger horns too. (summoners/handmaids and other those ridiculously large horns might be another story haha, at least they might need way more support and lightness)

kinda yeah. and if you'd use fimo airlight they'd weigh practically nothing : D

Anniina85 In reply to bakaotaku74 [2013-05-16 17:40:04 +0000 UTC]
it's the blue, hard insulation foam, I got a piece from a construction worker friend who had a stash. I guess they sell 'em in these huge ass blocks
