Ali was first to meet Anouk, not Dolly or even myself. She was the one who brought her in. Why the authorities called a mental hospital for a little girl who had just survived a fire, I don't know. Perhaps they were closest. Easier.
She was the one who picked her up as the firefighters watered the last burning remains of her home. Who pried her from the cooling body of her grandfather, who held her as she beat against the womans chest, screaming to let her go, go back, please he's still alive.
I could see the red marks on her chest, little fist marks, as she walked Anouk through the hallway. She was smiling though. She always was.
She was the first, and I think, the first to notice her difference. Maybe it was the fact that Anouk chose to walk herself, that she didn't need restraints or to be carried. Ali realised she wanted to walk alone and allowed it, but she still held a hand above her shoulder, hovering.

Ali is Anouk, Jack, Dolly's and many others careworker. She, unlike others in the house believes in intimacy, of hugs and kisses and trust. Seperating themselves from the children would not help their development and this is why she is loved.
Ali is from an English/Indian family and has one daughter, Nikita. She is not that traditional but loves the traditional soft trousers her people wear. So comfy!
