In Shale's world, the elves create fashion. Being the only beings that have survived (i.e they killed off everyone else), elves create a culture and aesthetic that's millennia old that other species have to use in order to fit in to the elven societies. It's often a case of do it, or no job, no house, no social standing.
Goblins, once being the focus of the elven lust for conquest, find it even harder to get along in their world. Goblins as a rule, do not care for aesthetic purposes and only in functional. The mountains in which they live have volcanic vents, which mean that clothes are not needed and the only decadence they enjoy is traditional, ear clips and rings that are signifiers of status and achievement within the community. So often, when goblins wish to work within eleven society, they must adapt to the lifestyle. Some goblins become enamoured with the romantic lifestyle and aesthetic of the elves and go further than wearing their clothes. Often goblins will buy glamours and undergo surgery to look like their four armed hosts. Using contacts gives them larger pupils and using makeup to give themselves features they do not naturally own. Goblins will also accept the gender roles that do not exist in their own society due to their inherent asexual nature.

Strata loves the elves. She's had surgery to reduce her nose, teeth and ears, and glamours take care of the rest. She loves her contacts and her extensions that give her soft locks like her idols, and she goes to elven thrift shops and takes in the clothing herself, to fit her padded bosom. The shoes hurt her feet but she loves what it makes her. She is deeply enveloped in the culture.
Strata is also part of the University management and works as a middle man between the goblin workers that keep the university held together and their bosses. She also acts as Shales liaison due to her scholarship (the dean thought it'd be appropriate, since they were both goblins). She's very sweet and quite considerate and doesn't understand why Shale feels uncomfortable with the adjustments she's made to herself. Strata just wants to fit in and anyway, aren't the elves just gorgeous?
